Bangladesh national team midfielder Shomit Shome has officially parted ways with Canadian professional football club Cavalry FC, bringing an end to a three-year association that began in 2023. On Wednesday, 14 January, the club released an official statement announcing that the 28-year-old would be released following the natural expiry of his contract. Alongside Shome, Cavalry FC also released fellow player Diego Gutierrez.
The club emphasised that the decision was purely contractual and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Shome for his contributions, wishing him success in the next stage of his career. Shome’s tenure at Cavalry FC coincided with some of the club’s most successful campaigns in recent history, marking him as a key figure in the squad.
Since joining the club in 2023, Shome has made 79 appearances across all competitions. While he did not score for the team, his vision and creativity from midfield contributed to four assists, helping his teammates find the back of the net. His defensive work rate and tactical intelligence made him a regular starter and a reliable presence in the squad.
Under his influence, Cavalry FC achieved notable success:
| Year | Competition | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Achievements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Canadian Premier League (CPL) | 38 | 0 | 2 | CPL Shield Winners |
| 2024 | North Star Cup | 41 | 0 | 2 | North Star Cup Winners |
| Total | All Competitions | 79 | 0 | 4 | 2 Major Titles |
Shome’s performances earned him multiple inclusions in the CPL Team of the Week and occasional recognition as Player of the Week, highlighting his influence on the pitch despite limited goal-scoring.
On the international stage, Shome has also made his mark with Bangladesh. He made his national team debut in June 2025 during the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore. To date, he has earned five caps and scored one international goal. His solitary strike came on 13 November 2025, in a dramatic late equaliser against Hong Kong at Dhaka’s Bangabandhu National Stadium, although Bangladesh eventually lost after conceding in the final moments.
Shome’s experience in Canadian domestic football has established him as one of South Asia’s prominent midfielders. Currently without a club, speculation is rife about where he might continue his career next. His departure from Cavalry FC, though part of a routine contractual process, marks the end of a memorable chapter in the club’s history and leaves Bangladeshi football fans eagerly anticipating his next move.
