Veterans Sidelined in AFC Women’s Asian Cup Selection

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has ignited a fierce debate following the announcement of a 29-member preliminary squad for the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup. While the roster introduces fresh talent, it is defined more by its notable absences: the exclusion of iconic captain Sabina Khatun and star forward Krishna Rani Sarkar. As the national side prepares for the finals in Australia this March, the cold shoulder given to the “golden generation” suggests a permanent shift in team dynamics under head coach Peter Butler.

A New Chapter: The Fresh Faces

The preliminary squad features four uncapped players, signaling a move towards youth and international scouting. Among the newcomers is Anika Rania Siddiqui, a Sweden-based forward whose inclusion marks a significant attempt to integrate the diaspora into the national setup.

The Fallout of the “January Mutiny”

The omission of Sabina, Krishna, Matsushima Sumaya, and Masura Parvin is widely viewed as the lingering aftermath of a player revolt against Coach Butler in January last year. While other participants in that protest, such as Monica Chakma and Ritu Porna Chakma, have been reintegrated, the veteran core remains “persona non grata.”

Sabina Khatun, 32, who recently captained the national side to a historic SAFF Women’s Futsal title in Bangkok, appears weary of the ongoing friction. “I hope to return to football, but I am in no rush,” she stated. “I am tired of this trouble. I just want everyone to be well.”

Governance vs. Performance

Current national captain Dalia Akter offered a balanced yet firm critique of the selection policy. While acknowledging the coach’s prerogative and the necessity of discipline, she warned against punitive measures that could curtail distinguished careers. “One can be punished for disciplinary reasons for a period, but the door should remain open once that is resolved,” Akter remarked. “Ultimately, the team comes before the individual, but the country comes before all.”

The timing of the selection is also peculiar; with only a month until the tournament begins in Australia, Peter Butler is currently in Pokhara, Nepal, focused on the SAFF U-19 tournament. In his absence, the preliminary squad has commenced training, leaving many to wonder if the bridge between the veterans and the management has been burned beyond repair.

The 29-Member Preliminary Squad

The squad remains a mix of experienced campaigners and rising stars, including:

  • Goalkeepers & Defence: Rupna Chakma, Surma Jannat, Sheuli Azim, Afida Khandakar, Nadia Akter Jyoti.

  • Midfield & Attack: Maria Manda, Monica Chakma, Tohura Khatun, Ritu Porna Chakma, Mosammat Sagorika, and Anika Rania Siddiqui.
