Liverpool Defeat Newcastle 4–1

Liverpool produced one of their most commanding performances of the 2025–26 Premier League season at Anfield on Saturday, overturning an early deficit to defeat Newcastle United 4–1. The victory propelled the Reds above Manchester United into fifth place, just a point behind fourth-placed Chelsea, signalling a return to top-five contention.

After weeks of criticism over a lack of creativity in attack, Liverpool responded emphatically. Their display combined fluid attacking style with relentless pace, marking their first occasion this season at Anfield of scoring more than three goals in a league match, following their season opener against Bournemouth, where they netted only two.

The standout performer was Hugo Ekitike, whose two goals turned the match decisively in Liverpool’s favour. Ekitike received superb support from Florian Wirtz, forming a partnership that has already accounted for six goals across all competitions this season, establishing themselves as one of the Premier League’s most effective attacking duos.

Newcastle, however, began brightly. Anthony Gordon scored from open play, ending a year-long wait for such a goal, to give the visitors an early lead. But Liverpool gradually seized control, exploiting Newcastle’s weakened midfield, where the absence of Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton left the Magpies unable to cope with the Reds’ speed and intensity.

Just before half-time, Wirtz’s brilliant dribble created the opportunity for Ekitike to level the score. Less than two minutes later, Ekitike converted Milos Kerkez’s long pass to put Liverpool ahead, instantly turning the momentum in the hosts’ favour.

In the second half, Newcastle appeared fatigued following a midweek Champions League clash against PSG. Liverpool capitalised on this with a slick combination between Wirtz and Mohamed Salah, resulting in the third goal, effectively sealing the win. In the closing stages, Ibrahima Konaté delivered an emotional finish, scoring on his first start since his father’s passing, securing the fourth goal and concluding the 4–1 victory.

Liverpool’s performance was reflected in the following key match statistics:

The victory marked Liverpool’s first comeback win since April, boosting morale and confidence within the squad. Meanwhile, Newcastle continues to struggle with poor away form, languishing in 10th place, a reminder of the inconsistency that has plagued their season.

Liverpool’s blend of tactical discipline, pace, and clinical finishing showcased a team capable of turning games around and sent a strong message to their Premier League rivals as the title race intensifies.
