Sato Targets Third Indy 500 Triumph

Two-time winner Takuma Sato is set to return to the Indianapolis 500 in 2026, as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) confirmed the Japanese veteran will contest the 110th running of the iconic race.

The 49-year-old will pilot the No. 75 Honda-powered entry at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway, backed once again by primary sponsor AMADA AMERICA, Inc.. The partnership continues a strong relationship that has supported Sato’s recent appearances at the event.

Sato will attempt to qualify for his 17th start in what is widely regarded as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, with his sights firmly set on securing a historic third victory.

Unfinished Business

The announcement comes after a particularly promising 2025 campaign, in which Sato demonstrated front-running pace throughout the month of May. He qualified on the front row and led a race-high 51 laps, only for a costly pit-lane error to derail his challenge, ultimately relegating him to ninth place.

Reflecting on that performance, Sato made it clear that his return is driven by a sense of unfinished business.

“The moment the chequered flag fell last year, our preparation for the next race had already begun,” he said. “We showed tremendous speed and potential, and now we come back even more focused and determined. This race is always special, but this year feels even more significant.”

Strong History With RLL

Sato’s association with RLL spans multiple periods (2012, 2018–2021, and 2024 onwards), during which he has enjoyed considerable success. Notably, four of his six IndyCar victories have come with the team, including his second Indianapolis 500 triumph in 2020.

Team co-owner Bobby Rahal praised Sato’s enduring competitiveness and enthusiasm.

“Takuma has always been exceptional at Indianapolis,” Rahal said. “Last year, he was arguably the fastest driver in the field. It was unfortunate how the race unfolded, but his speed and determination were clear for all to see.”

Fellow co-owner Mike Lanigan echoed that sentiment, highlighting Sato’s experience and proven ability at the speedway.

“His two victories speak for themselves,” Lanigan added. “We’re excited to support him in his pursuit of a third win.”

Commercial Partnership Strengthened

AMADA’s continued involvement underscores the growing alignment between motorsport performance and industrial innovation. The company, a global leader in machine tools and sheet metal processing, sees the Indianapolis 500 as an ideal platform to showcase its commitment to precision and excellence.

CEO Mike Guerin noted that the 2026 race coincides with the firm’s 80th anniversary, making the collaboration particularly meaningful.
