Alejandro Garnacho World Cup Uncertainty

Alejandro Garnacho’s recent career trajectory has come under renewed scrutiny following mixed performances at club level and uncertainty over his international prospects with Argentina.

The Argentine winger first emerged in April 2022, making his senior debut for Manchester United at the age of 17. From the outset, he attracted attention not only for his technical ability but also for his admiration of Cristiano Ronaldo, despite being born in Argentina, where Lionel Messi is widely regarded as the national icon. This personal preference did not affect his progression into international football, and he has since earned eight senior caps for Argentina. He was also included in the squad for the 2024 Copa América.

Garnacho’s club career later took a significant turn when he left Manchester United in 2025 to join Chelsea. During his time at United, he was initially viewed as one of the club’s promising young talents, with former midfielder Paul Scholes describing him as an “artist”. Early in his development, he was also linked with potential inclusion in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup squad, although he ultimately did not make the final selection under coach Lionel Scaloni.

His performances in the current season have been inconsistent. Across all competitions, he has registered 39 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. In the Premier League specifically, he has managed one goal and four assists in 22 appearances. These figures have been cited in discussions around his recent form and his role within the Chelsea squad.

Reports also highlight his involvement in matches against former club Manchester United, where he was substituted after a subdued performance. Earlier disagreements with former United manager Rúben Amorim over tactical positioning have been referenced in accounts of his departure from the club. Although naturally a winger, he was at times deployed in a central “number 10” role, which contributed to discussions regarding his tactical fit.

Following a recent match at Stamford Bridge, footage recorded by supporters showed Garnacho standing on the pitch while Manchester United players headed towards the tunnel. In the same context, no opposing players were seen engaging with him after the match.

Subsequently, United defender Luke Shaw posted an image on Instagram showing Garnacho on the ground during a match, captioning it “big win”. The post received reactions from several individuals connected to the club, including teammate Steven Bartlett, who responded with laughter, United captain Bruno Fernandes, who shared a GIF reading “that’s an absolute embarrassment”, and former teammate Alex Telles, who reacted with fire and heart emojis.

Garnacho has also spoken publicly about his time at Manchester United. In an interview with Premier League Productions, he acknowledged mixed feelings regarding his departure, stating:

“Maybe a bit, yes. Because I loved the club. They trusted me from the beginning, bringing me from Spain to the academy and then giving me my first-team opportunity. I spent four or five years there and received a lot of affection from everyone—fans, stadium, everything was very good. But sometimes, for the good of life or the next step, change is necessary. I only have good memories of Manchester United.”

Under Amorim, Garnacho initially faced difficulties before regaining some involvement in the squad, with the coach reportedly praising his work rate. However, tactical uncertainty over his best position and subsequent exclusion from regular plans contributed to his reduced role. Garnacho has also stated that time out of the squad led him to make what he described as certain “wrong decisions”.

On the international stage, Garnacho has reiterated his decision to represent Argentina, citing early trust from the national setup and the opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi. He stated that this influence played a significant role in his choice, describing it as an opportunity difficult to decline.

However, according to the latest available information, his name has not been included in Lionel Scaloni’s provisional plans for the upcoming World Cup squad. Since November 2024, he has not featured for Argentina in international fixtures, leaving his future participation in major tournaments uncertain based on current selections.
