Brazilian head coach Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that only players who are 100% fit will be considered for the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. This strict fitness requirement applies even to superstars Neymar and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior. Ancelotti stated unequivocally that if either Neymar or Vinicius is only 90% fit, he will select another player who is fully fit instead.
Speaking on Brazil’s TV channel ‘Record’ during the programme ‘Sport Record’, Ancelotti emphasised the depth of talent available to the team. “There is no shortage of quality players. I must choose those who are 100% fit. This applies not only to Neymar but also to Vinicius. If Vinicius is only 90% fit, I will pick someone else who is fully ready. We have plenty of options, especially in attack, so the competition is intense,” he said.
Neymar has been absent from the Brazil squad for over two years due to injuries. He last played in October 2023, when he underwent ACL surgery. Although he has returned to club football, he has not yet been able to regain consistent form. Recently, he even risked playing with a knee injury for Santos, scoring a decisive goal to help the club avoid relegation.
Ancelotti praised Neymar’s talent but highlighted the challenges posed by his recurring injuries. “He is an exceptional talent, but unfortunately, injuries have prevented him from being in peak physical condition. Yet, he remains on par with the others when it comes to potential selection. His quality is undeniable,” the coach remarked.
Brazil has no more fixtures scheduled for the remainder of the year. Ancelotti’s team will play friendly matches next March, after which the World Cup squad will be announced. Neymar must achieve full fitness before then if he hopes to feature in the tournament.
