Bangladesh Forward Al-Amin Banned for Fifteen Matches by FIFA
FIFA has handed a severe fifteen-match ban to Bangladesh national team forward Al-Amin following an ugly on-field altercation and misconduct towards match officials during a four-nation tournament in the Maldives last June. Midfielder Mirajul Islam received a separate two-match suspension arising from the same chaotic incident, delivering a significant blow to the national setup’s disciplinary standing.
Having represented the senior national team in just two matches, the lengthy suspension threatens to sideline Al-Amin from international football for nearly two years, given the typical scheduling density of Bangladesh fixtures. Such heavy sanctions remain exceptionally rare in the country’s football history. The most notable comparable precedent occurred back in 1989 during the South Asian Games in Pakistan, when the then-captain Elias Hossain received a one-year ban for assaulting a referee.
Controversy is not entirely unfamiliar to the young forward. During the 2020-21 domestic season, Al-Amin represented Arambagh Krira Sangha. Following a match-fixing investigation that resulted in severe penalties and the subsequent disqualification of the club, he and several other players served a one-year domestic ban imposed by local football authorities.
The latest disciplinary breach unfolded on the night of 7 June during the Diamond Jubilee Football Tournament, organised to mark seventy-five years of Maldivian football. Tensions boiled over deep into stoppage time during a fiercely contested fixture between the Bangladesh Olympic team and their Maldivian hosts.
The flashpoint occurred when a routine challenge for possession between Bangladeshi forward Pias Ahmed and Maldivian player Hassan Inaz resulted in the latter tumbling to the turf. Indian referee Sekaran Senthilnathan awarded a free-kick to the hosts, prompting immediate and furious protests from the visiting squad. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into a physical brawl and general scuffling on the pitch.
Midfielder Mirajul Islam was shown a straight red card for rushing onto the field from the technical area in protest. Moments later, Al-Amin received his marching orders for aggressively disputing the official’s judgement, culminating in him shoving the referee. Despite the dramatic scenes and heightened security presence, the volatile encounter eventually concluded in a one-all draw before disciplinary reviews confirmed the subsequent punishments.
