Abdus Sadeque, a legendary figure in Bangladeshi sports as both an elite athlete and a prominent organiser, has passed away at the age of 80. He died at 8:00 am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital in the capital, following a 1.5-year battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, two sons, a daughter, and numerous admirers.
His first funeral prayer (Janaza) is scheduled for today after the Asr prayer at the Baitus Sobhan Jame Mosque in the I-Block of Basundhara Residential Area. The second Janaza will take place tomorrow, Sunday, at 10:30 am at the Old DOHS ground in Banani, Dhaka.
Abdus Sadeque hailed from an illustrious sporting family; his father, Advocate Abdus Sobhan, was a renowned swimmer during the British era. His younger brother, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, is the Chairman of Basundhara Group and was also a celebrated hockey player. Furthermore, his eldest son, Ishtiaque Sadeque, is a prominent sports personality and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of T Sports.
International Hockey Career and Linguistic Edge
Born on 17 September 1946, Abdus Sadeque excelled equally in football and cricket, though he rose to prominence as a star player for the undivided Pakistan national hockey team. Despite the restrictive socio-political climate for East Pakistanis, his talent earned him a call-up to the 1968 Pakistan Olympic hockey squad, though an injury ultimately prevented him from competing.
In 1969, he participated in a 1.5-month European tour with the Pakistan national team, playing in West Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and England, followed by a match against Egypt. His exceptional on-field performance quickly garnered international recognition, and he developed a close friendship with the team’s top star, Rashid Junior. Unlike many of his teammates from the 1968 Olympic championship squad, Abdus Sadeque was fluent in English, which made him highly valued within the team for communication.
His younger brother, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, played alongside him as a right-half in the East Pakistan youth hockey team. Following Bangladesh’s independence, Abdus Sadeque captained the Cumilla District team in the 1973 National Hockey Championship, securing the title after his younger brother scored the match-winning goal in the final.
Captaincy and Coaching at Abahani Krira Chakra
In 1972, following independence, Abahani Krira Chakra emerged as a major sporting club. The club’s founder, Sheikh Kamal, selected Abdus Sadeque—who had previously played for prominent clubs like Victoria and Dilkusha—to lead the new sides. He was appointed the first-ever captain of both the football and hockey teams of Dhaka Abahani Limited, subsequently leading the hockey team to a hat-trick of league championships.
After retiring as a player, Abdus Sadeque transitioned to coaching in 1977, taking charge of the Abahani football team. Under his stewardship, Abahani made history by remaining undefeated throughout the entire league season, securing dominant victories in all matches except for three draws. This marked the first time a club became undefeated champions in independent Bangladesh.
Leadership During Crisis and Sports Administration
Following the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family in 1975, Abahani Krira Chakra faced an existential crisis, with many organisers fleeing abroad and players staying away out of fear. Abdus Sadeque took the initiative to preserve the club by organising meetings at his Dhanmondi residence to ensure the team returned to the field. In recognition of this critical leadership, Abahani Limited later honoured him with a lifetime membership.
Abdus Sadeque served as the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation from 1983 to 1985. Through his diplomatic efforts at the Asian Hockey Federation meeting, he successfully secured the hosting rights for the 1985 Asia Cup Hockey tournament in Dhaka, winning the support of Pakistan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Iran over the initial choice, Japan.
He was also instrumental in organising the 2017 Asia Cup in Dhaka and introduced modern infrastructure, including stadium floodlights and electronic scoreboards, to Bangladeshi hockey. During a visit to Dhaka, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) President, Leandro Negre, recognized him instantly, praising his status as a hockey legend.
National Team Captaincy and Honours
When the first official Bangladesh national hockey team was formed for the 1977–78 season, Abdus Sadeque was appointed captain for a three-match test series against Sri Lanka, resulting in one win, one draw, and one defeat. He also captained Bangladesh during its inaugural appearance at the Asian Games in 1978. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the nation’s sports, he was awarded the National Sports Award in 1996.
