Barcelona Begin Title Defence with Five-Goal Rout
Barcelona made a commanding start to their Spanish La Liga title defence by defeating Elche 5–0 away from home in their opening match of the new season.
Hansi Flick’s side wasted little time in establishing their authority, producing an emphatic performance that combined attacking efficiency with sustained pressure. The result gives the reigning champions an ideal opening to their campaign as they look to retain the league title.
Brazilian forward Raphinha and young midfielder Fermin Lopez were the main protagonists, with both players scoring twice. New signing Karim Adeyemi also marked his Barcelona debut with a goal, while substitute Anthony Gordon made a significant contribution after coming on in the second half, providing two assists.
Barcelona took the lead after just 14 minutes when Raphinha converted from the penalty spot. The early breakthrough settled the visitors and allowed them to control the tempo of the match.
Elche attempted to remain competitive, but Barcelona continued to create opportunities and eventually doubled their advantage before half-time. Adeyemi completed a memorable debut when he converted a pass from Raphinha to make it 2–0.
Barcelona returned from the interval with further attacking intent. Gordon was introduced as a substitute and quickly made an impact. His first incisive pass created the opportunity for Raphinha to score his second goal of the night, extending Barcelona’s lead to 3–0.
Gordon then supplied another precise assist, this time setting up Fermin Lopez, who calmly finished to put Barcelona four goals ahead. The visitors had effectively taken the contest beyond Elche’s reach, but they continued to push forward in search of further goals.
Fermin completed the scoring late in the match after receiving a pass from young midfielder Xavi Espart. His second goal capped an outstanding individual performance and completed Barcelona’s 5–0 victory.
The result will provide considerable encouragement to Flick at the beginning of the campaign. Barcelona’s attacking depth was particularly evident, with goals coming from established players, a young midfielder and a new arrival, while Gordon’s impact from the bench offered another attacking option.
For Elche, the opening fixture proved a difficult return to competitive action against the reigning champions. Barcelona, meanwhile, could hardly have asked for a more convincing beginning to their bid for another La Liga title.
