Barcelona Eyeing Cut-Price Deal for Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez
Barcelona are reportedly keeping a close eye on Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez as they look to shore up their defensive options in the upcoming January transfer window. However, any potential move for the Argentine centre-back hinges on a clear-cut condition: the Catalan club want the English giants to lower their financial demands and let the player leave at a bargain price.
According to reports from Spanish sports daily Sport, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has placed the 28-year-old defender high on the club’s shortlist for the winter window. The primary stumbling block for the La Liga heavyweights remains their long-standing financial constraints. Having invested heavily in squad reinforcements during the summer transfer window, the club lacks the fiscal freedom to splash out large sums on a major mid-season transfer.
Addressing the club’s monetary standing recently, Barcelona treasurer Ferran Olivé revealed that while there is a minor financial surplus, it remains severely restricted, amounting to roughly three to four million euros. Olivé noted that welcoming any new face in January would require the club to offload an existing squad member first to balance the books. Consequently, securing a player of Martínez’s calibre would demand a deeply economical and budget-friendly arrangement.
Meanwhile, head coach Hansi Flick is facing a severe defensive crisis due to a string of injuries. The early months of the campaign have seen key defensive figures like Eric García, Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen, and Javi Espart sidelined, leaving the backline alarmingly thin. This mounting pressure has made signing an experienced, left-footed centre-back an absolute necessity, with Martínez emerging as a potential solution to plug the gaps.
Martínez is currently contracted to Manchester United until 30 June 2027, though the Old Trafford club holds an option to extend his stay by an additional year. A sale during the winter window could provide United with a financial injection, while giving Barcelona a rare opportunity to acquire a seasoned and versatile defender on favourable terms. At present, however, no formal negotiations or official talks have taken place between the two clubs.
Away from the transfer rumours, Manchester United are enduring a turbulent period on the pitch. The team has struggled to find consistency in the Premier League, lingering uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. Martínez’s domestic frustrations were starkly highlighted during a recent clash against Chelsea, where he received two yellow cards within a frantic four-minute span, resulting in a red card and compounding United’s defeat.
