De Jong Eyes Barcelona Return as Flick Welcomes Midfielder Back
The 29-year-old made his competitive return in Sunday’s El Clásico against Real Madrid, coming on as a substitute for approximately 16 minutes. Although his involvement was brief, the appearance marked an important milestone in his recovery and gave him an opportunity to begin rebuilding his match fitness.
De Jong suffered a ligament injury to his right knee while representing the Netherlands at the World Cup. The injury forced him to spend an extended period away from competitive football as he worked through rehabilitation and gradually regained his fitness.
For Barcelona, his return offers another option in midfield. De Jong is known for his ability to retain possession, carry the ball through midfield and link defensive play with attacking movements. Those qualities could prove valuable as the club looks to maintain control of matches and create opportunities against well-organised opponents.
During the El Clásico, Flick deployed De Jong in a more advanced midfield role rather than his familiar defensive midfield position. The decision offered a glimpse of how the Dutchman might be used as he works his way back into the team.
Flick was encouraged by the midfielder’s performances in training and believes his presence on the ball can strengthen Barcelona’s play.
“He has done very well in training and gives us a lot of strength on the ball. It was very important for us to have him back on the pitch, even if only for a few minutes,” the Barcelona manager said.
The praise will provide a welcome boost for De Jong, but regaining full fitness is only the first step towards securing a regular starting role. Barcelona have several midfielders competing for places, including Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal. The original report also names Rodri among the players in the competition for midfield positions.
There could nevertheless be opportunities for De Jong in a more attacking role. Dani Olmo’s injury has affected Barcelona’s options in that area, with Fermín López currently featuring in the position. De Jong’s versatility may give Flick greater flexibility when deciding how to organise his midfield.
The Dutchman has made it clear that he does not want to spend an extended period on the bench. Speaking to Dutch television channel Ziggo Sport, he emphasised his desire to play regularly as the season progresses.
“I have never spent a long time on the bench, and I do not want that to happen this season either. I am now fully fit and getting fitter every day. I hope to get more playing time,” he said.
De Jong also recognises that his return must be managed carefully after such a prolonged absence. Building match sharpness, maintaining physical condition and gradually increasing his playing time will be important as he seeks to return to his previous level.
Explaining his approach, he added: “I understand that I have to return gradually. However, the long-term goal is to play regularly and regain my place in the starting line-up as quickly as possible.”
For Flick, De Jong’s return brings greater depth and tactical flexibility to Barcelona’s midfield. His passing range and composure in possession could help the side progress the ball under pressure, while his experience may prove useful in demanding domestic and European fixtures.
However, competition for places remains intense. A positive assessment from the manager and a short appearance in a high-profile match do not guarantee an immediate return to the starting XI. De Jong will need to demonstrate his fitness consistently and make the most of the opportunities he receives.
His immediate priority is to build up his playing time without compromising his recovery. If he can maintain his fitness and deliver consistent performances, the Dutch midfielder will have a stronger chance of re-establishing himself as a regular member of Barcelona’s first team.
