FIFA has suspended Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, national team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following criticism of the referee after Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina at the World Cup.
Hossam and Ibrahim have each been handed three-match suspensions, while Zico has received a five-match ban. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced the disciplinary measures on Monday.
The sanctions followed angry reactions from the Egyptian camp over several refereeing decisions during the match. Hossam criticised the officiating after Egypt’s elimination, while Zico reportedly insulted the referee during a post-match interview.
The 60-year-old Hossam blamed the referee’s decisions for contributing to Egypt’s exit from the tournament. FIFA subsequently imposed a three-match suspension on the coach. His twin brother, Ibrahim, who serves as the national team’s director, received the same punishment.
Zico was handed a longer ban after making an offensive remark about the match official. During his post-match interview, the forward reportedly described the referee as an ‘oppressor’, prompting FIFA to suspend him for five matches.
Disallowed Goal and Penalty Appeal Spark Controversy
Two key incidents during Egypt’s encounter with Argentina fuelled the controversy surrounding the match.
One of Egypt’s goals was disallowed after the referee ruled that a foul had occurred during the attacking move leading up to the finish. The decision frustrated the Egyptian players and coaching staff, who questioned the officiating.
Further controversy arose towards the end of the match, when the score was 2-2. Egypt’s players appealed for a penalty, but the referee rejected their claims. Argentina eventually secured a 3-2 victory, leaving Egypt to reflect on a defeat overshadowed by disputes over the match officials.
The incidents prompted strong reactions from the Egyptian camp, with Hossam publicly questioning the referee’s decisions and Zico directing an offensive remark at the official after the final whistle.
However, FIFA referees committee chief Pierluigi Collina has defended match officials amid the criticism. He has warned that hostile reactions and accusations against referees can create serious concerns, including potential threats to the officials and their families.
The issue has renewed attention on the relationship between match officials and players or coaching staff, particularly when controversial decisions influence the outcome of important fixtures. While teams are entitled to raise concerns through the appropriate channels, disciplinary rules require players and officials to maintain acceptable standards of conduct.
Egypt Considers Appeal Against FIFA Sanctions
Following the announcement, the Egyptian Football Association said it had requested a detailed explanation from FIFA’s disciplinary committee regarding the suspensions.
The association intends to examine the reasons behind the decisions and assess the available legal options before determining whether to lodge an appeal. It has not yet confirmed whether it will formally challenge the sanctions.
The suspensions could create difficulties for Egypt as the national team prepares for its upcoming international fixtures. Hossam and Ibrahim are expected to miss the November matches against Malawi, which are part of the next stage of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Their absence could affect the team’s preparation and management during an important period. There are also concerns that the two brothers could miss Egypt’s opening fixture during the March international window, depending on the applicable suspension arrangements.
Zico faces a longer spell on the sidelines. His five-match ban could keep him out of action until June, potentially limiting Egypt’s attacking options over the coming months.
The disciplinary action represents a setback for the Egyptian national team as it prepares for its next competitive commitments. The coaching staff may need to adjust its plans in the absence of key personnel, while the forward’s suspension could reduce the available options in attack.
For now, the Egyptian Football Association is reviewing FIFA’s decision and considering its next move. Whether an appeal will be filed, and whether it could lead to any changes in the suspensions, remains uncertain.
