Flick’s Barcelona Match Historic La Liga Winning Start
Barcelona have continued their impressive run under German manager Hansi Flick, matching a significant club record after beating Getafe 3–0 at Spotify Camp Nou in La Liga. The victory marked their eighth consecutive league win, equalling the club’s best-ever start to a Spanish top-flight campaign.
The achievement places Flick’s side alongside the Barcelona team managed by Argentine coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, who won their opening eight league matches during the 2013–14 season. More than a decade later, the Catalan club have once again demonstrated their ability to establish an early advantage in one of Europe’s most competitive domestic leagues.
Barcelona had already built considerable momentum before the international break. They recorded consecutive victories over Elche, Athletic Club, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia, Levante, Racing Santander and Sevilla, maintaining their position at the top of the league table. Their return to domestic action brought another convincing result against Getafe, allowing them to preserve that winning momentum.
The 3–0 scoreline provided another positive result for Flick as Barcelona continued their pursuit of consistency across the opening stages of the campaign. An uninterrupted sequence of victories can be particularly valuable in a long league season, helping a team build confidence while creating pressure on its closest rivals. For Barcelona, the latest result also reinforced the significance of their strong start under the German coach.
The club now have an opportunity to move closer to a record that has stood for more than half a century. Real Madrid hold the all-time La Liga record for the most consecutive victories at the beginning of a season, having won their first nine matches in the 1968–69 campaign.
Barcelona’s next fixture could therefore prove historically significant. Flick’s players are scheduled to face Real Betis at the La Cartuja Stadium next weekend. A victory would take their winning sequence to nine league matches and see them equal Real Madrid’s long-standing record.
The challenge will not simply be about extending their winning run. Barcelona must also maintain their concentration and performance levels against opponents determined to interrupt their momentum. Although an excellent start can strengthen a club’s position in the title race, sustaining that form over an entire season remains a separate challenge.
For Flick, matching Barcelona’s previous record represents an encouraging milestone in his work with the team. The prospect of equalling a historic La Liga achievement adds further significance to the upcoming meeting with Betis.
Barcelona have already matched their own best opening sequence with eight successive victories. One more win would place them alongside Real Madrid’s record-setting side of 1968–69, giving the Catalan club another notable achievement to pursue as the league campaign progresses.
