The Indian women’s cricket team has reached the final of the Women’s World Cup on two previous occasions, in 2005 and 2017, but has never managed to lift the trophy. On the first occasion, they were defeated by Australia, and on the second, by England, leaving them trophy-less.
In contrast, the South African women’s cricket team has reached the World Cup final for the very first time. Having delivered a stellar performance to reach the final, they are now considered one of the favourites to win the title. The question on everyone’s mind is: will the home favourites India triumph, or will the in-form South African side emerge victorious?
Historically, Australia has dominated the Women’s World Cup, with England securing the remaining titles. Out of 12 editions played so far, only once has a team other than Australia or England—New Zealand—lifted the trophy. Therefore, whether the trophy goes to South Africa or India, the cricketing world is set to witness a new champion.
Both India and South Africa reached the final by defeating former world champions in the semifinals. India overcame Australia, while South Africa defeated England. Ahead of the final, the key question is: which of the two finalists holds the upper hand in terms of strength and form?
Statistics show that India and South Africa have faced each other 34 times in One-Day Internationals. India has won 20 of these encounters, while South Africa has claimed victory in 13 matches, with one match abandoned.
In the last five meetings between the two teams, the Indian women have largely dominated, winning four out of five. However, South Africa won the most recent encounter, defeating India by three wickets during the ongoing World Cup.
Looking at the current World Cup performances, South Africa has a slight edge. They won five of their seven group-stage matches, while India recorded three wins and one draw.
India’s journey to the semifinals was far from easy. They secured their place by defeating New Zealand in a do-or-die encounter during the final group-stage match.
As mentioned, India has previously reached the final twice—losing to Australia in 2005 and to England in 2017. South Africa, on the other hand, has made their maiden appearance in a World Cup final.
The Proteas will face an additional challenge in the form of the home crowd, as the final will be played in India. The stands are expected to be filled with a sea of blue supporters.
