IndyCar has confirmed a landmark partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment aimed at delivering one of the most ambitious events in the championship’s modern history: the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. The agreement places one of America’s most influential sports and entertainment groups at the heart of the promotional, commercial and hospitality efforts for a race weekend designed to be as symbolic as it is spectacular.
Scheduled for 21–23 August, the Freedom 250 will see the NTT IndyCar Series race on the National Mall and surrounding streets for the first time. It will also mark the return of top-level circuit racing to the area after more than two decades, the last such event having been staged by the American Le Mans Series in 2002. The timing is deliberate and highly significant, with the race forming part of nationwide celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, following an executive order signed last week by President Donald Trump.
Under the terms of the partnership, Monumental Sports & Entertainment will act as the official agency for marketing, sponsorship activation and corporate hospitality sales for the event. The company is a dominant presence in the Washington sporting landscape, owning and operating several major professional franchises including the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. Its experience in staging large-scale events in the capital is expected to play a crucial role in transforming the Freedom 250 into a globally visible showcase.
Bud Denker, chairman of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. and president of Penske Corporation, described the collaboration as a natural fit. He emphasised the shared sense of purpose between IndyCar and Monumental, highlighting the ambition to combine cutting-edge motorsport with a celebration of national identity. Denker underlined that bringing IndyCar’s street-racing spectacle to the National Mall represents a rare opportunity to unite speed, innovation and patriotism in a setting of unparalleled historic significance.
From Monumental’s perspective, the event is viewed as far more than a race. Jim Van Stone, the group’s president of business operations and chief commercial officer, framed the Freedom 250 as a civic moment that places fans at the centre while presenting Washington, D.C. as a world-class host city. He noted that the partnership will focus on creating meaningful connections between supporters, sponsors and the capital itself, ensuring the event resonates beyond the motorsport community.
As with the rest of the IndyCar calendar, the Freedom 250 will be broadcast on network television via Fox Sports, guaranteeing national exposure. Details of the circuit layout, event schedule and supporting activities are expected to be unveiled at a formal launch event in the coming weeks.
