Joyful Start to the Year as Neymar Extends Santos Contract

The long-running speculation surrounding Neymar’s future has finally been resolved. On Wednesday, Brazilian club Santos formally confirmed the renewal of the contract of the 33-year-old superstar, securing his services until 31 December 2026. The announcement was reported by Brazilian media outlet Globo.

Negotiations between Santos and Neymar’s representatives had been ongoing for several weeks. This will be Neymar’s third contract with the Vila Belmiro-based club. Previously, in 2025, the club had signed him twice on six-month contracts. This latest agreement is a full one-year deal, ensuring continuity for both player and club.

According to sources cited by Globo, an official announcement detailing Neymar’s contract and his continued role as Santos’ number 10 is expected in the coming hours. The contract will remain valid for the remainder of club president Marcelo Teixeira’s tenure, ensuring stability in Santos’ long-term plans.

Santos had been optimistic about retaining Neymar since the end of the Brazilian league. His previous contract expired on 31 December, and there were concerns negotiations might drag on until the very last moment—concerns that proved justified. Despite playing for Europe’s Barcelona in the past and winning the Champions League, Neymar now receives a monthly salary equivalent to four to five average players at the club.

In addition to the player contract, Neymar’s image rights are managed in a separate agreement with his family-owned company NR Sports, valued at BRL 85 million, which Santos is due to settle by the end of the year.

Since the start, Santos’ Neymar project was planned through mid-year, coinciding with the World Cup. The club has never considered letting go of their iconic player, and Neymar and his representatives prioritised ensuring the new deal was practical and sustainable.

Currently, Neymar is focused on rehabilitating from a left knee meniscus surgery, with a return to competitive play expected no earlier than mid-February. The club’s medical team is closely supervising his recovery.

Neymar’s performance in the recently concluded season was pivotal. He helped Santos avoid relegation in Brazil’s top division, playing despite injury in the final three matches. The club won all three games 3–0, with Neymar scoring and assisting in the first match, recording a hat-trick in the second, and playing the full 90 minutes in the third.

This contract extension not only secures Neymar’s presence at Santos but also strengthens his bid to secure a spot in the Brazilian national team for the 2026 World Cup, having last represented the Seleção in October 2023.
