England produced a stirring second-half comeback to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and secure a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup, with captain Harry Kane scoring twice in the closing stages to keep the Three Lions’ title hopes alive.
After falling behind early in the match, England dominated large spells of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Congolese defence. Kane’s clinical double eventually turned the contest on its head, sending England into the knockout stage, where they will face Mexico on 6 July.
The Three Lions made an unconvincing start as DR Congo shocked the favourites with an early opening goal. Brian Sipenga capitalised on England’s defensive lapse to put the African side ahead, forcing Gareth Southgate’s men to chase the game from the outset.
England responded positively, taking control of possession and creating a succession of chances throughout the first half. Despite their attacking intent, they lacked composure in front of goal, allowing DR Congo to head into the interval with their slender advantage intact.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with England increasing the intensity of their attacks and pushing more players forward. DR Congo defended resolutely, frustrating the Europeans for much of the contest as England searched desperately for an equaliser.
The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute. Anthony Gordon delivered an excellent cross from the left wing, and Kane timed his run perfectly before powering a header towards goal. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau managed to get a hand to the effort, but he could not keep the ball out as England finally restored parity.
The equaliser dramatically shifted the momentum in England’s favour. Sensing an opportunity to complete the turnaround, the Three Lions continued to press relentlessly, while DR Congo attempted to regroup through tactical changes.
In the 76th minute, the Congolese coaching staff introduced Theo Bongonda and Edo Kayembe in place of Noah Mukau and goalscorer Brian Sipenga, hoping the fresh legs would strengthen both midfield and attack during the closing stages.
England’s sustained pressure eventually produced the decisive moment four minutes from time.
In the 86th minute, Gordon was once again involved, finding Kane just outside the penalty area. The England captain drove forward into the box before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike that flew beyond Mpasi-Nzau and into the net, completing a remarkable comeback.
Having trailed 1-0 only 15 minutes earlier, England had transformed the match through Kane’s two goals in an 11-minute spell. His leadership, composure and clinical finishing proved decisive in one of England’s toughest group-stage encounters.
The victory underlined England’s resilience after a frustrating first hour and demonstrated their ability to respond under pressure. While the team’s attacking play created numerous opportunities throughout the match, it was Kane’s experience and finishing quality that ultimately separated the two sides.
Anthony Gordon also emerged as one of England’s standout performers, providing both assists and consistently troubling the Congolese defence with his pace, movement and accurate delivery from wide areas.
England will now turn their attention to a last-16 showdown against Mexico on 6 July. The knockout fixture is expected to provide a sterner examination as the Three Lions continue their quest to lift the World Cup trophy.
For Kane, the performance served as another timely reminder of his importance to the national team. When England needed inspiration most, their captain delivered, rescuing his side from the brink of elimination and ensuring their World Cup campaign remains firmly on course.
