Legendary Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has officially called time on his illustrious professional career. The 41-year-old icon announced his retirement on Tuesday (21 July), bringing an end to a remarkable 22-year journey between the posts.
Having celebrated his birthday last week, Ochoa had previously indicated that the 2026 World Cup would mark his final appearance on the international stage. Speculation persisted regarding a potential move to another club to prolong his playing days, but the veteran shot-stopper ultimately opted to hang up his gloves for good.
In a heartfelt farewell message posted on social media, Ochoa reflected on his time in the game, stating that he gave everything he had for both club and country. He noted that being a goalkeeper requires waiting an entire ninety minutes for a single pivotal moment where everything rests on one’s shoulders, leaving no room for hesitation. He expressed deep gratitude, adding that he walks away filled with pride, supported by the affection of millions of supporters.
By featuring in his sixth World Cup campaign, Ochoa joined an elite group of footballers alongside giants such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. He served as Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the 2018 tournament in Russia, and the 2022 edition in Qatar, producing numerous unforgettable saves on the global stage.
Ochoa made his senior professional debut in February 2004 for Mexican giants Club América. After seven impressive seasons, he made history in 2011 by joining French club Ajaccio, becoming the first Mexican-born goalkeeper to sign for a European side.
His European journey saw him represent several notable clubs, including Málaga, Granada, Standard Liège, Salernitana, AVS Futebol, and AEL Limassol, before returning for a second stint with Club América between 2019 and 2022.
During the recently concluded World Cup, Ochoa served as the backup to starting goalkeeper Raúl Rangel. Manager Javier Aguirre brought him on for the final thirteen minutes of Mexico’s final group fixture against the Czech Republic, allowing him a proper farewell on the pitch.
The moments following the final whistle were deeply emotional. Standing at the iconic Estadio Azteca—the venue where his professional career first took flight—Ochoa kissed the goalposts and knelt on the turf as teammates embraced him. Long after the stadium had emptied, he walked to the centre circle to offer one last farewell to the arena.
Over his career, Ochoa lifted the domestic league title with Club América and claimed the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège. On the international stage, he was instrumental in leading Mexico to six CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and played a key role in securing a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
