Lionel Messi has expressed his view that Neymar should feature for Brazil at this year’s World Cup, emphasising the importance of the forward’s presence in the tournament. Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami and represents Argentina, shared these remarks in an interview while reflecting on his long-standing association with Neymar.
Messi and Neymar were teammates for four seasons at Barcelona and later spent two further seasons together at Paris Saint-Germain. The pair separated professionally in 2023, but Messi maintained his appreciation for the Brazilian forward’s qualities and career significance.
In the interview, Messi stated that the best players should be present at the World Cup and described Neymar as belonging to that category regardless of his current condition. He added that Neymar holds considerable importance for both Brazilian football and the sport globally. Messi also acknowledged his personal connection, noting that he is not entirely neutral and would always prefer to see Neymar involved in the competition.
He further stated that he wishes positive outcomes for Neymar’s life, describing him as an exceptional individual, and reiterated his desire for the Brazilian to participate in the World Cup.
Neymar is currently playing for his boyhood club Santos. His recent career has been affected by injury, particularly to his knee. In 2026, he has featured in only eight matches so far. He underwent a minor surgical procedure in December and another medical treatment in March. During the current season, he has scored three goals and provided two assists.
Messi also commented on Neymar’s personality, highlighting his natural style and individuality. He said Neymar does not pretend to be someone else and lives according to his own preferences, without excessive concern for external opinions.
Neymar began his professional career at Santos, where he played from 2009 to 2013 before moving to Europe. He later joined Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Barcelona, where he had played alongside Messi. He subsequently moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, but his time there was also impacted by a serious knee injury.
Since 2013, Neymar has been a regular member of the Brazil national team. However, due to injury and form issues, he has not played for the national side since 2023. Prior to that, he represented Brazil in three World Cup tournaments.
