Lionel Messi continued to rewrite the record books with a commanding performance as Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 3–1 in Major League Soccer (MLS), scoring twice and contributing to another goal. The Argentine superstar’s display not only secured three valuable points for his side but also established a landmark achievement in the league’s history.
Messi became the first player in MLS history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons. The milestone underlines his remarkable consistency and his ability to influence matches in more ways than simply finding the back of the net.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has now scored 25 goals and registered 15 assists in the current campaign. His latest performance also earned him the man-of-the-match award, further strengthening his position among the league’s leading players.
The historic moment came shortly before half-time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In the 45th minute, Germán Berterame put Inter Miami ahead, with Messi providing the secondary assist in the move. Although he was not the player who delivered the final pass before the goal, his contribution to the attacking sequence proved decisive in taking him beyond another statistical landmark.
Messi then took centre stage after the interval. In the 56th minute, he increased Miami’s advantage with a superb individual effort, weaving past several defenders inside the penalty area before firing home with his favoured left foot. The goal showcased the close control, balance and composure that have defined his career at the highest level.
Just four minutes later, Messi struck again. Taking advantage of a swift counter-attack, he finished clinically to extend Miami’s lead and put the visitors in a commanding position. His two goals proved crucial in securing the victory, while his involvement in the opening goal demonstrated the breadth of his attacking influence.
The performance has also strengthened Messi’s position in the race for the MLS Golden Boot, awarded to the league’s leading goalscorer. With 25 goals to his name, he remains a major contender for the individual honour as the season progresses.
He is also firmly in contention for a third consecutive Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award. Winning the prize for a third successive season would represent another extraordinary achievement, reflecting the sustained impact he has had since arriving in American football. However, the final outcome will depend on performances over the remainder of the campaign and the strength of the competition.
Inter Miami, meanwhile, have found their winning rhythm at a crucial stage of the season. The victory over Atlanta United marked their third consecutive win, during which they scored nine goals and conceded just one. That run suggests the defending champions are building momentum as they prepare for the challenges of the play-offs.
Miami had already secured their place in the post-season earlier in the week. With 55 points, they strengthened their position in second place in the Eastern Conference. Maintaining that standing would give them home advantage in the opening round of the play-offs, an important benefit in a competition where narrow margins can determine a team’s progress.
The result also highlighted the importance of Messi’s partnership with his team-mates. His ability to create opportunities, exploit defensive gaps and deliver decisive finishes gives Miami multiple routes to goal. While his individual brilliance continues to attract attention, the team’s recent defensive solidity and attacking efficiency will be equally important if they are to mount another successful title challenge.
Inter Miami now have a historic ambition in sight: becoming the first team since the LA Galaxy in 2011 and 2012 to win the MLS Cup in consecutive seasons. Achieving that feat will require consistency and resilience against increasingly difficult opposition in the knockout stages.
For Messi, the latest milestone adds another chapter to an already remarkable career. Having achieved unprecedented success in European football and led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he continues to demonstrate that his influence extends well beyond his goalscoring record.
His latest display was a reminder of why he remains one of football’s most decisive players. With Miami gathering momentum and the play-offs approaching, the focus will now turn to whether Messi can convert his extraordinary individual form into another championship-winning campaign.
