A high-profile diplomatic and humanitarian visit to the Rohingya refugee camps was marred by an accident today when a vehicle in Mesut Özil’s convoy collided with a battery-powered auto-rickshaw. The German World Cup winner and former Arsenal playmaker was returning from a field visit in Cox’s Bazar when the incident occurred on the Teknaf-Cox’s Bazar highway.
The collision, which took place at approximately 6:45 pm near the Ukhiya Kutupalong area, left the three-wheeled auto-rickshaw severely mangled. Emergency responders confirmed that the driver of the rickshaw sustained injuries, though his identity has not yet been formally released to the public.
Violation of VIP Protocol
According to Saiful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Ukhiya Shahpori Dwip Highway Police Station, the accident was triggered when the auto-rickshaw abruptly breached the established VIP security corridor.
The convoy included not only the football star but also Bilal Erdoğan, the son of the Turkish President, who had accompanied Özil on the humanitarian mission. Local authorities stated that the rickshaw swerved into the path of the motorcade, making a collision with one of the support vehicles unavoidable.
“The auto-rickshaw entered the VIP protocol lane suddenly as the convoy was returning from the camps,” OC Saiful Islam told the press. “A collision ensued with one of the vehicles in the fleet. We have since seized the rickshaw for further investigation.”
Aftermath and Medical Response
The injured rickshaw driver was immediately provided with local medical assistance. While the vehicle itself was “twisted and crushed” due to the impact, the football star and the Turkish delegation reportedly escaped the incident unharmed and continued their journey under heightened security.
