Mohamed Salah Summoned to Cairo Court Over Unpaid Legal Fees

CAIRO — Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah faces a complex legal battle in his home country after the New Cairo Court of First Instance issued a formal directive ordering him to appear in person over an ongoing financial dispute with his former legal representative.

The court order stems from a civil lawsuit initiated in September 2025 by attorney Amr Farag Allah Morsi Abdel Tawab. The lawyer alleges that the high-profile international winger failed to settle substantial outstanding fees for legal, administrative, and advisory services delivered over more than a decade. Under the judicial mandate, Salah is required to attend a court hearing in Cairo on 6 September.

The root of the disagreement lies in professional management services the lawyer claims to have carried out on behalf of the player. Official court documents indicate that their legal relationship was established under a general power of attorney granted by Salah in 2012, early in his career as an emerging prospect in European football. That legal authorization remained in force for thirteen years until August 2025, when Salah formally revoked the mandate. Beyond demanding the full settlement of alleged back fees, the attorney is seeking financial compensation for emotional and pecuniary damages incurred during the prolonged period of non-payment.

Judicial Mandate and Legal Implications under Egyptian Law

Salah has rejected the attorney’s assertions in their entirety, denying both the validity of the work scope outlined in the petition and the existence of any unpaid financial obligations. Following his formal written submission, the court directed the forward to appear in person and deliver a solemn oath to verify the truthfulness of his defense statements.

Egyptian statutory procedure dictates that if Salah fails to appear or refuses to take the oath without demonstrating a valid, legally recognized exemption, he will be formally classified as having refused the oath. Under domestic jurisprudence, such a refusal operates as an implicit admission of the plaintiff’s claims. Such a development could prompt the court to issue an immediate summary judgment against the footballer, compelling him to satisfy the full monetary demand. The presiding judge has held the final verdict in abeyance pending the outcome of the September proceedings.

Fixture Clash Complicates Süper Lig Transition

The judicial directive arrives at an awkward juncture for the Egyptian national team captain. Having recently drawn the curtain on a celebrated, trophy-laden era with Premier League club Liverpool, Salah embarked on a fresh chapter by signing for Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor.

The forward is slated to make his debut for Trabzonspor on 15 August against Kasımpaşa. However, the scheduled 6 September court hearing falls on the exact day Trabzonspor are set to face Gençlerbirliği in league action. The overlap creates an immediate clash between his competitive duties in Turkey and his legal obligations in Egypt.

With the court date approaching, legal representatives for the forward must evaluate whether to seek a formal postponement from the Cairo judge or arrange for the player’s personal attendance to prevent an adverse default ruling.
