The tenure of Javier Cabrera has officially drawn to a close, marking the commencement of a new era for Bangladeshi football under the stewardship of Thomas Dooley. The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) formally finalised a two-year contract on Friday, 22 May, appointing the German-born American tactician as the new head coach of the men’s national football team.
Following his arrival in Dhaka, the newly appointed manager was officially introduced to the public by the BFF President, Tabith Awal. The introduction took place during the afternoon at the prestigious “Cool-BSPA Sports Award” ceremony, organised by the Bangladesh Sports Press Association. Attending the event as a special guest, the former United States midfielder utilised the platform to articulate his long-term professional objectives, specifically addressing where he intends to position the national team within the global footballing hierarchy during his multi-year tenure.
Aiming for Significant FIFA Ranking Improvement
Addressing the audience regarding his core aspirations, Dooley revealed that his primary competitive objective is to elevate Bangladesh significantly higher in the international standings. The tactician expressed a clear desire to guide the national squad into a significantly more respectable position globally. He stated:
“My goal is to get into the 160 or 150 bracket in the rankings. It won’t happen overnight. It is a long process.”
To contextualise his strategic approach to achieving this target, Dooley referenced his own published literature. The manager has authored a book titled “The Truth About Success in Soccer That No One Teaches”, which details his foundational philosophies on professional athletic development. According to the coach, the book outlines four essential structural components required to build a winning footballing culture. Amongst these four main pillars, Dooley emphasised that establishing the correct psychological framework remains absolutely paramount. He noted that a team’s mentality is the critical factor that dictates their overall capacity for growth and sustained success on the pitch.

“A realistic goal is to take the team to a position where they can attract more attention and play beautiful football. I like to play football, I don’t like to run after the ball. I am telling my players this as well. I don’t like the thing of chasing the ball. Because then you just have to run for nothing to get the ball back, and most of the time you don’t even get the ball back. I like to play with the football at my feet.”
Concluding his initial media address, the former American international stressed the absolute necessity of diligence, discipline, and mutual commitment from the national pool of players. He emphasised that climbing the international ladder requires immense physical and mental exertion from every individual involved in the national set-up. Dooley concluded by stating:
