FC Barcelona have not reached a UEFA Champions League final since their 2015 triumph, when they defeated Juventus to win a fifth European crown. Since then, the club have gone 11 seasons without returning to the final stage of the competition.
In the most recent campaign, Barcelona’s Champions League run ended in the quarter-finals. They were eliminated 3–2 on aggregate by a Madrid-based opponent, bringing another European campaign to a close before the semi-final stage.
Despite this, head coach Hansi Flick has maintained a positive assessment of his squad. The 61-year-old, who previously achieved major success with Bayern Munich, including winning the UEFA Champions League, has repeatedly stated that Barcelona remain competitive at the highest level of European football.
His comments were made during a Champions League season that also featured a dramatic semi-final first leg between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The match, played at the Parc des Princes, finished 5–4 in favour of PSG, marking the highest-scoring semi-final in the history of the competition. Flick followed the match after Barcelona’s elimination and was reportedly disappointed by Bayern’s defeat, given his former role at the German club.
Since winning the Champions League in 2015, Barcelona have reached the semi-finals twice but have not progressed further. The club have also experienced setbacks in European competition more broadly, including spells in the UEFA Europa League in 2022 and 2023 after failing to advance from the Champions League group stage.
Under Flick, Barcelona have shown signs of improvement in knockout competitions but have yet to convert that into sustained progress towards the final. Their latest exit came after a closely contested two-legged quarter-final, which they lost 3–2 on aggregate to a Madrid-based side.
When asked whether Barcelona can compete with elite European clubs such as PSG and Bayern Munich, Flick responded firmly: “100%, yes.”

Barcelona’s European performances since 2015 show a mix of strong runs and early exits, with no return to the final stage. Nevertheless, Flick’s remarks underline his belief that the squad remains capable of competing with Europe’s strongest teams.
