Bangladesh women’s national football team are preparing for an overseas training camp as part of their build-up to the SAFF Women’s Championship in Goa, with the reigning champions targeting an unprecedented third consecutive South Asian title.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) is in the final stages of confirming a two-week high-performance training camp in either China or Thailand. The proposed programme is designed to elevate physical conditioning, sharpen tactical execution, and improve overall match readiness ahead of the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on 25 May in Goa, India.
Key national team figures, including forward Rituparna Chakma and midfielder Maria Manda, are expected to be central to the preparation phase as Bangladesh seek to extend their regional dominance.
Final decision pending on venue
BFF Vice-President Fahad Karim confirmed that discussions are ongoing regarding the final destination, with both China and Thailand under active consideration based on infrastructure quality, availability of suitable sparring partners, and logistical convenience.
“We are planning a two-week camp either in Thailand or China,” he said. “As this period falls outside the FIFA international window, it will not be possible to arrange matches against other national teams. However, we are working to organise friendly matches against local clubs to ensure competitive match exposure.”
He added that efforts are also being made to secure high-quality training environments abroad that can replicate international match intensity, particularly in terms of tempo, physicality, and tactical discipline.
Structured domestic preparation phase
Before departing overseas, the squad will undergo a phased domestic training programme aimed at building a strong physical and tactical foundation.
According to BFF planning, the team will first assemble for a 10-day training camp in Chattogram. This phase will focus primarily on endurance development, strength conditioning, and tactical organisation under controlled training conditions.
Following the Chattogram camp, the players will return to Dhaka for a brief two-day final preparation phase. This stage will emphasise tactical fine-tuning, set-piece rehearsals, and match simulation exercises before international departure.
After completing domestic preparations, the squad will travel directly to their overseas training base and will not return to Bangladesh prior to the tournament. The team is expected to fly to Goa on 21 or 22 May, depending on final scheduling and logistical confirmation.
Preparation roadmap
| Phase | Location | Duration | Key Focus |

| Phase 1 | Chattogram | 10 days | Fitness conditioning, endurance, tactical structure |
| Phase 2 | Dhaka | 2 days | Final tactical adjustments, match simulation |

Title defence and evolving competition
Bangladesh enter the tournament as two-time defending champions, having secured back-to-back SAFF Women’s Championship titles. The upcoming edition presents a significant opportunity to achieve a rare hat-trick of regional triumphs, further strengthening their position as the dominant force in South Asian women’s football.
This year’s competition will feature six participating nations following the absence of Pakistan. While the reduced number of teams alters the tournament structure, it is expected to intensify competition among the remaining sides, all of whom will be aiming to challenge Bangladesh’s recent supremacy.
Learning from past preparation challenges
The Bangladesh Football Federation had previously explored overseas training camps ahead of major AFC competitions, including the AFC Women’s Asian Cup and AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup. However, those plans were ultimately not implemented due to scheduling conflicts, budgetary limitations, and logistical complications.
Officials now appear determined to ensure that the current SAFF preparation plan is executed without disruption, viewing it as a crucial opportunity to bridge the gap between domestic preparation and international-level competition standards.
Importance of international exposure
Football analysts suggest that sustained exposure to high-intensity training environments abroad could significantly enhance Bangladesh’s tactical awareness, physical resilience, and in-game adaptability.
The proposed overseas camp is expected to provide players with access to faster-paced training sessions, diverse playing styles, and structured friendly matches against club sides, all of which are considered vital for improving decision-making under pressure.
For a team that has rapidly established itself as a regional powerhouse but still seeks consistency on the broader Asian stage, such exposure is seen as a key developmental step.
Outlook
With expectations rising and regional rivals closely monitoring Bangladesh’s preparations, the upcoming training phase is increasingly viewed as a decisive element in their SAFF campaign strategy.
If successfully implemented, the overseas camp could play a pivotal role in shaping Bangladesh’s performance in Goa, as the team aims not only to defend its title but also to further cement its dominance in South Asian women’s football.
