Bangladesh Under-20 head coach Gerard Jones has again raised concerns about his personal safety after an altercation with an assistant coach reportedly led him to call the national emergency service and request police assistance at the team hotel.
The British coach made the allegations in a video message posted on Facebook on Monday night, 24 August. Jones claimed that he had been physically assaulted at his workplace and said he contacted the police because he believed he needed protection.
According to Jones, the incident escalated following an argument with an assistant coach, during which there was an exchange of words and physical pushing. He said calling the emergency service was a step taken in self-defence after the situation became serious enough for him to seek outside assistance.
“I was assaulted at my workplace. I had to call the police in self-defence,” Jones said in his video message.
The coach also claimed that he informed the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) about the incident and sent photographs showing the injuries he said he had sustained. However, he alleged that he did not receive the assistance or support he expected from the federation.
“I still do not feel safe,” Jones said, adding that he had found himself repeatedly having to ask for help while working in Bangladesh.
Jones also rejected reports suggesting that his relationship with the goalkeeping coach had deteriorated. He insisted that there was no dispute between them and described their relationship as a positive one.
“There is no disagreement with the goalkeeping coach. Our relationship is very good,” Jones said. He explained that they regularly interacted, visited each other’s rooms, shared jokes and discussed tactical matters related to matches.
The coach alleged that someone was deliberately spreading false information in an attempt to create confusion within the team environment. He did not identify the person or provide specific evidence to support the allegation.
Jones further suggested that personal interests could be behind the circumstances surrounding the incident. He said he had never previously experienced a physical assault in the workplace during his professional career, nor had he ever needed to seek assistance from the police or the British embassy for his personal safety.
The timing of the incident has also added significance to the controversy. Bangladesh’s Under-20 side is preparing for an Asian Football Confederation competition, where the team hopes to make a strong impression. Jones questioned why such a situation had emerged at a time when, in his view, the side had an important opportunity to achieve something positive at the continental level.
The allegations have placed the focus not only on Jones’s personal safety but also on the working environment surrounding the Under-20 team. A stable relationship among members of the coaching staff is particularly important during preparations for an international competition, when players and coaches are expected to remain focused on training, tactical planning and matches.
