Rituparna’s Pace and Attack Worries North Korea Coach

Bangladesh is competing in Group B of the Women’s Asian Cup, facing the reigning champions China and former champions North Korea. The tournament features twelve teams, with North Korea currently the highest-ranked team in the group at FIFA ranking 7.

On Thursday, ahead of their Group B encounter, North Korea coach Ri Son Ho praised Bangladesh’s attacking capabilities, specifically highlighting three players as significant threats.

“Bangladesh is far stronger than we expected,” Ri said. “Their attack is fast, coordinated, and very effective. They excel at transitioning from defence to offence, and our backline must be alert at all times to prevent scoring opportunities.” He singled out number 17, Rituparna Chakma, describing her as “exceptionally quick on the left flank and capable of launching dangerous attacks that can unsettle any defence.”

Bangladesh’s debut match against China drew attention for its spirited performance. Rituparna and Monika repeatedly breached China’s defensive lines, creating multiple goal-scoring chances. One particularly memorable moment came in the 14th minute when Rituparna unleashed a powerful long-range shot that impressed both spectators and coaching staff alike.

The tournament is structured into three groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will progress to the quarter-finals. Ri Son Ho remarked, “We aim to win every match. Goal difference is not our primary strategy, but it may become crucial in the later stages for tie-breaks.”

This match represents a rare encounter between Bangladesh and North Korea. The last face-off occurred in 2019 when Dhaka Abahani Club met North Korea’s April 25 team. Reflecting on the six-year interval, Ri observed, “Football standards in South and South-East Asia have improved tremendously. Teams like Bangladesh are advancing rapidly. Their performance against China clearly shows they now rank among Asia’s stronger sides.”

Bangladesh’s debut in the Women’s Asian Cup has drawn widespread attention. Rituparna’s speed and attacking skill have made her a player to watch. Under the guidance of coach Peter Butler, the team is quickly adapting to the continental stage and establishing Bangladesh as a rising force in women’s football in Asia.
