Bangladesh Regret Missed Goal Against China

Facing a formidable opponent like China was a significant challenge for the Bangladesh women’s football team. Despite a 2-0 defeat against the nine-time Asian champions, the Bangladeshi players delivered a performance that was widely praised for its determination and discipline.

The match, held at Western Sydney Stadium, left the team with a lingering sense of regret, particularly over Rituparna’s missed opportunity to score. Midfielder Maria Manda reflected on the moment: “Of course, there is some disappointment. When you face a strong team, any chance you get is precious. Converting it would have given us a huge boost. We have watched her shot many times, analysing every detail.”

Beyond the disappointment, the focus remained on the team’s overall performance. Speaking after a morning training session at Sydney’s Jubilee Stadium, Maria said, “We faced a tough team, but we gave our absolute best. I believe we succeeded in putting our effort into action. Conceding only two goals to a nine-time champion is itself a learning experience for us.”

After the match, players were visibly fatigued and retired for rest soon after dinner. On the topic of bonuses, Maria added, “We were too tired immediately after the game to discuss such matters. However, the Federation President encouraged us and emphasised the importance of preparing for upcoming matches.”

Goalkeeper Mili was a standout performer, displaying composure and remarkable reflexes throughout the game. Maria praised her contribution, saying, “At first, there were doubts about how she would perform, but she didn’t let us down. Her performance was excellent, and we had complete confidence in her abilities.”

Looking ahead, Bangladesh will face equally challenging opponents in North Korea and Uzbekistan. On the upcoming match against North Korea on 6 March, Maria said, “Since we started the first match well, we must approach the next with the same intensity. But we cannot underestimate any team—every group opponent is strong. Results ultimately depend on performance on the field. Sometimes strong teams lose, and so-called weaker teams can progress.”

Maria concluded by crediting the team’s success to consistent practice and the unwavering support of fans. “We train constantly, and that effort is paying off. Special thanks to everyone encouraging us at home and abroad—your support inspires us to perform at our best,” she added.
