INDIAN WELLS, United States, 15 March 2025 – Aryna Sabalenka delivered a stunning performance on Friday, dismantling Madison Keys 6-0, 6-1 to secure her place in the Indian Wells final, where she will face rising teenage star Mirra Andreeva. The victory also served as sweet revenge for Sabalenka, who had suffered a painful loss to Keys in the Australian Open earlier this year.
The 17-year-old Russian prodigy Andreeva continued her remarkable run by defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6 (7/1), 1-6, 6-3, halting the world No. 2’s bid to become the first woman to claim three Indian Wells titles.
Sabalenka’s Statement Win
Sabalenka, determined to settle the score with Keys after her Australian Open heartbreak, came out firing.
“I was hungry,” the Belarusian admitted. “That loss in Australia was really devastating for me. I needed time to recover from it. Losing again today would have played on my mind, and I didn’t want that. I was extremely focused—I just really wanted to beat Madison.”
Sabalenka completely dominated from the outset, neutralising Keys’ powerful game with precision and aggression. The American, who had been on a 16-match winning streak, found herself completely overwhelmed.
Sabalenka stormed through the first 11 games before Keys finally held serve at 5-1 in the second set. However, the brief reprieve was short-lived, as Sabalenka quickly closed out the match, setting up a final against Andreeva.
Reflecting on her tactical approach, Sabalenka said, “I think I played really smart tennis. The goal was to keep her out of rhythm, and I executed that perfectly.”
The 26-year-old also made light of the generational gap between her and her teenage opponent, joking, “It’s going to be like an old mama playing against a kid.”
Andreeva Stuns Swiatek Again
Andreeva, already the youngest WTA 1000 champion in history after her triumph in Dubai last month, showcased maturity beyond her years in defeating Swiatek for the second time in as many tournaments.
Swiatek, who had not dropped a set in her previous 10 Indian Wells matches, looked to be in complete control early on, conceding just one point in her first three service games. However, Andreeva struck first, securing a crucial break for a 5-4 lead.
Although Swiatek managed to break back and force a tiebreak, Andreeva seized control with a blistering backhand winner to start the decider. The teenager remained composed, taking the set as Swiatek sent a backhand wide.
“I told myself to play the tiebreak like it was the last tiebreak of my life,” Andreeva said. “I went for my shots, my serve was solid, and I felt super comfortable.”
Swiatek roared back in the second set, breaking Andreeva three times to level the match.
“The second set felt a bit weird,” Andreeva admitted. “She was hitting really deep, with good height over the net, and I struggled to counter that.”
However, Andreeva quickly regained control in the third, breaking Swiatek to open the set and sealing victory with a third break.
“I just decided to stick to my game but be a little more aggressive,” she said. “I handled my nerves well, and I’m really proud of myself.”
