Schalke Secure Bundesliga Return

Schalke, seven-time German top-flight champions, have confirmed their return to the Bundesliga after three seasons away from the country’s premier football division. The club secured promotion from the 2. Bundesliga by consolidating their position at the summit of the second tier.

On Saturday (2 May), Schalke recorded a 1–0 victory over Fortuna Düsseldorf. Although three league matches remain, the result ensured Schalke will finish the campaign in at least second place with 67 points, guaranteeing promotion to the Bundesliga. The team also moved ten points clear of third-placed Hannover in the standings.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 13th minute, when captain Kenan Karaman scored the only goal. His strike proved sufficient to secure all three points and confirm Schalke’s position among the league’s top two sides.

Following the match, Karaman described the achievement as difficult to express in words, highlighting the long anticipation shared by the club, the city, and its supporters. He added that completing this final step at home was particularly significant and that the supporters deserved the outcome.

For safety reasons, supporters were advised not to enter the pitch after the final whistle, with several hundred stewards deployed at the stadium. Despite this, celebrations took place in the stands, where fans marked the occasion with songs and pyrotechnic displays.

Schalke’s promotion marks their second return to the Bundesliga from the second division within five years. After being relegated in 2021, they immediately bounced back by winning the 2. Bundesliga the following season. However, the club suffered relegation again in 2023, leading to another campaign in the second tier. They will now compete in the 2026–27 Bundesliga season.
