In a remarkable display of consistency and skill, Shamsunnahar Junior, the star striker of Farashganj Sporting Club, has been named Player of the Match in five consecutive games of the Bangladesh Women’s Football League—a rare achievement in the competition’s history.
Today, at Kamalapur Stadium, Shamsunnahar’s solitary strike secured a 1-0 victory over fellow title contenders Bangladesh Army, marking Farashganj’s fifth consecutive win. The Army had entered the match with an unbeaten record in their previous five games, while Farashganj was on a four-match winning streak.
The decisive moment came when a defensive lapse from the Army allowed Shamsunnahar to receive the ball just outside the penalty area. With a perfectly timed left-footed shot, she curled the ball into the far corner of the net, demonstrating her clinical finishing under pressure. Her goal not only delivered the three points but also positioned Farashganj strongly on the path to the league title. The team now faces their next challenge against Rajshahi Stars, led by Rituparna and company.
Shamsunnahar’s individual statistics have drawn attention across the league. Over the five matches, she has scored an impressive 19 goals and secured Player of the Match honours in all games—jointly in the first and as the sole recipient in the subsequent four. Notably, she scored four goals in both of the previous two matches, even while battling illness.
Reflecting on her performance, Shamsunnahar said,
“This match was a challenge for us. Scoring the winning goal feels incredible. Being named Player of the Match in all five games is very special. After four consecutive awards, I realised it might be a record.”
Although she has scored more frequently with headers in her career, Shamsunnahar expressed satisfaction with her left-footed goal today, calling it her best in a tough encounter.
“I want to keep improving. The better I play, the more goals will come,” she added.
Farashganj captain Maria Manda remained grounded despite the victory, stating,
“The league is not over yet. There are tough matches ahead, and winning the title will be difficult. But we are confident. Most of the Army squad are national team players, so beating them is a big boost.”
