Simeone Apologises After Sideline Incident With Vinicius

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has publicly apologised for his conduct on the sidelines during the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia. The Argentine, known for his fiery temperament, expressed regret for mocking Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior during the high-stakes encounter.

Cameras captured Simeone repeatedly provoking Vinicius throughout the match. According to reports, he warned the 22-year-old winger about his future at the club, saying, “Florentino will get rid of you, remember what I’m saying.” The comments, widely circulated on social media, sparked criticism and intense debate among football fans and pundits.

Ahead of Atletico’s Copa del Rey last-16 clash against Deportivo La Coruña, Simeone addressed the incident at a press conference:
“I apologise to Florentino and Vinicius for my behaviour. It was a mistake to involve myself in that situation. I acknowledge it was wrong. The team that deserved to win advanced, and they did so.”

When asked whether his actions had crossed the line, Simeone clarified, “I am apologising, but I am not seeking forgiveness. There is nothing more to add.”
