Niklas Süle, the German centre-back and former UEFA Champions League winner, has announced that he will retire from professional football at the age of 30. He is set to bring his career to a close after Borussia Dortmund’s final match of the current season.
Süle, who turned 30 in September, has decided to step away from the game during what is often considered the peak age range for professional footballers. His decision comes in the context of repeated injury setbacks over the course of his career, particularly serious knee problems.
The defender has represented Germany at two FIFA World Cups and had been expected to remain part of future international squads. However, injury concerns contributed to his withdrawal from contention for another tournament cycle. According to data attributed to Transfermarkt, Süle has missed a total of 133 matches during his 13-year professional career due to injuries sustained at club and international level. Notably, he has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
In 2022, Süle joined Borussia Dortmund on a four-year contract after leaving Bayern Munich. The German club had already confirmed that his contract would not be extended beyond the current season. His spell at Dortmund followed a highly successful period at Bayern Munich, where he established himself as a key defensive figure.
On 18 April, during a Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim, Süle sustained a knee injury. Initial fears suggested another ACL rupture; however, subsequent scan results confirmed that the injury was not as severe as first suspected. Despite this, Süle proceeded to make the decision to retire from professional football.
Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast, he confirmed his decision, stating: “I want to announce that I will end my career this summer.” He also reflected on the moment when an ACL injury was feared again, saying: “In the Hoffenheim dressing room, when our team doctor was carrying out the drawer test, he was shaking his head while looking at the physio. After the physio examination, I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes. At that moment, I genuinely thought, ‘it has torn’.”
Although medical examinations later confirmed that he had not suffered an ACL rupture, Süle explained his reasoning for stepping away from the game. He added: “The next day, after the MRI scan, I learned that it was not the ACL. At that moment it was 1000 per cent clear to me that everything was over. Rather than risking another injury, it is better for me to look forward to something positive in the future, where I can be free, go on holiday, and spend time with my children.”
During his career, Süle achieved significant success at club level. He won the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020 and later reached the final with Borussia Dortmund in 2024, finishing as runner-up. He also secured five Bundesliga titles during his time at Bayern Munich.
