Victor Font Pledges Messi’s Barcelona Return

Barcelona continues to captivate fans on the pitch with its strong performances this season. Yet, beyond the stadium, the Catalan club is witnessing heightened political activity as it approaches its presidential election on 15 March. Among the leading candidates is Catalan entrepreneur Víctor Font, who has made headlines by promising that, if elected, he will immediately reach out to former superstar Lionel Messi.

Font has emphasised that one of his primary objectives is to restore Messi’s connection with Barcelona. He revealed that should he win, his first call would be to Messi himself. “I know the channels to contact him, whether directly or indirectly,” Font asserted. “Reconnecting with the club’s historic icons is a key part of my vision for Barcelona’s future.”

Messi remains the club’s most celebrated player in its storied history. During his tenure, he scored 672 goals in 765 appearances and helped Barcelona secure 35 major trophies. Despite his legendary status, financial constraints forced the club to let him leave for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2021. Font insists that Messi represents the very identity of Barcelona, stating that, if elected, he would present the club’s strategic plans directly to Messi and ensure he receives the recognition he deserves.

Font did not shy away from criticising the current president, Joan Laporta, claiming that losing a player, brand ambassador, and emblem like Messi was a significant blow. “It is crucial to re-establish our ties with Messi across sporting, commercial, and institutional domains,” Font explained. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that bringing Messi back would not be an easy task.

Currently, Messi is playing in the Major League Soccer (MLS) for Inter Miami in the United States. Last year, he extended his contract with the club until 2028. While many speculate that he may finish his career in the U.S., Messi has repeatedly expressed a desire to spend his post-retirement life in Barcelona with his family.

Font’s promise to facilitate Messi’s return has already sparked considerable debate ahead of the election. Ultimately, the outcome of the vote will determine the club’s future direction and whether Messi’s legacy will once again be entwined with Barcelona’s on-field and off-field ambitions.
