Vinícius Banned for Four Matches, Ruled Out of El Clásico
Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension for pulling an opponent’s hair and reacting aggressively after being shown a red card. The punishment rules the Brazilian winger out of four La Liga fixtures, including the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona, dealing a significant blow to Real Madrid.
The suspension follows an incident during Saturday night’s match against Villarreal. The disciplinary committee imposed a two-match ban for pulling the hair of Villarreal player Nathaniel Saliba, then added another two matches because of Vinícius’s behaviour after his dismissal.
As a result, the Brazilian will miss league matches against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia. He is expected to return against Celta Vigo in the 13th round of La Liga, with the fixture scheduled to take place between 20 and 23 November.
His absence means Real Madrid will be without one of their most influential attacking players for more than a month of domestic league action. Missing El Clásico, in particular, could force the coaching staff to reconsider their attacking plans for one of the season’s biggest fixtures.
The Incident That Led to His Red Card
The controversial incident occurred in the 70th minute of the match against Villarreal. Vinícius pulled Saliba’s hair during the build-up to a counter-attack that ended in a goal.
The incident initially escaped the referee’s attention. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, prompting referee Díaz de Mera Escuderos to review the footage several times. He subsequently showed Vinícius a straight red card, and the goal was disallowed.
The referee’s report played a crucial role in determining the length of the suspension. It explicitly stated that the ball was not being contested when Vinícius pulled his opponent’s hair.
That distinction was significant because football disciplinary rules differentiate between offences committed while challenging for the ball and misconduct unrelated to the contest for possession. In this case, the committee imposed a two-match suspension for the initial offence.
Vinícius’s conduct following the dismissal then resulted in a further two-match ban. According to the referee’s report, his attitude was aggressive, and teammates had to restrain him.
Reports also indicated that Vinícius confronted a La Liga official during the heated exchange and used insulting language towards the league. The incident added to the controversy surrounding his dismissal and contributed to the disciplinary proceedings.
Real Madrid Unhappy With the Punishment
Real Madrid consider the four-match suspension excessively harsh and believe the punishment is disproportionate to the offence. The club has expressed dissatisfaction with the decision, raising concerns about the approach taken by refereeing officials and the disciplinary committee.
The Spanish giants had anticipated the possibility of a lengthy suspension but had hoped the penalty would be limited to fewer than three matches. A two-match ban would have been considered a favourable outcome, while four matches exceeded their expectations.
The club had also hoped the committee would take a more lenient view of Vinícius’s reaction after the red card.
Real Madrid reportedly believed there was room to argue for a reduction because the referee’s report did not explicitly record the alleged abusive language. However, after considering the report and the available video footage, the committee decided not to reduce the punishment.
The decision leaves the club with little choice but to reorganise its attacking options for a demanding stretch of league fixtures.
El Clásico Absence a Major Blow for Madrid
Vinícius’s absence against Barcelona is arguably the most significant consequence of the suspension. The Brazilian has become a key figure in Real Madrid’s attacking system, using his pace, dribbling ability and movement to unsettle opposition defences and create scoring opportunities.
Without him, the coaching staff will need to adjust their approach for El Clásico. His absence against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia will also reduce the manager’s attacking options during an important period of the campaign.
Real Madrid have not announced who will replace him in the starting line-up for those matches. The team will have to find alternative ways to maintain its attacking threat without one of its leading forwards.
Vinícius remains available for Champions League fixtures, subject to the competition’s separate disciplinary regulations, because the suspension applies to La Liga matches. His immediate focus is therefore expected to shift towards European competition.
For Real Madrid, the priority will be to limit the impact of his absence and maintain momentum in the league. For Vinícius, the episode is a costly reminder that misconduct on the pitch, as well as a reaction to disciplinary decisions, can have consequences extending well beyond a single match.
With El Clásico among the fixtures he will miss, the suspension has created an additional challenge for Madrid ahead of one of the most closely watched encounters in Spanish football.
