In a recent interview with British sports outlet GiveMeSport, the Chelsea midfielder shared his aspirations of captaining the national team. He explained, “Personally, I absolutely dream of captaining Argentina, but that decision is not mine to make. It’s in the hands of the coaching staff. Being captain of Argentina would be a tremendous honour. I don’t know when it will happen, but if I have the chance to wear the armband, it will be an incredible moment for me.”
Currently, Lionel Messi remains Argentina’s captain, having led the Albiceleste to their 2022 World Cup triumph. It is widely expected that Messi will retain the armband for the 2026 tournament, though speculation over his retirement could eventually open the door for Fernández to fulfil his dream.
Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Fernández expressed how special it was to play alongside Messi. “Winning the World Cup with Lionel was an unbelievable moment. We were inspired because we grew up watching him on television. His only remaining dream was the World Cup, and sharing that moment with him was an immense pride. We wanted to win it for him—it was his one unfinished ambition,” Fernández stated.
Looking ahead to 2026, Fernández was realistic about Argentina’s chances of defending their title. He referenced past instances where nations achieved consecutive World Cup victories, such as Italy in 1934–1938 and Brazil in 1958–1962. He added, “We are focused on what lies ahead. This could be Messi’s last World Cup, so we will give everything to retain the trophy. That’s our priority.”
