Ford Delays Hypercar Driver Decisions

Ford Motor Company has indicated that it may not finalise its full driver line-up for its highly anticipated 2027 Hypercar programme in the FIA World Endurance Championship until late 2026, as preparations for its return to top-tier endurance racing gather pace.

The American marque, which is developing a new LMDh prototype for competition in both the WEC and IMSA’s GTP class, has so far confirmed three drivers to spearhead its testing and development efforts: Logan Sargeant, Sebastian Priaulx, and Mike Rockenfeller. However, endurance racing’s demanding format—particularly events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans—requires a significantly larger roster, with at least six race drivers plus reserves.

Dan Sayers, head of Ford’s LMDh programme, confirmed that while further announcements are expected in the coming months, the final composition of the squad may not be determined until the closing stages of the year. The deliberate pace reflects Ford’s desire to strike a careful balance between youth, experience, and adaptability in a fiercely competitive field.

Rockenfeller’s presence provides a cornerstone of experience, having previously triumphed at Le Mans and gained valuable mileage in modern prototype machinery. By contrast, Priaulx arrives from a GT racing background, while Sargeant continues to adapt after his career in Formula 1—illustrating Ford’s intent to blend proven pedigree with emerging talent.

Building a Competitive Line-up

Ford’s recruitment strategy remains fluid, with discussions ongoing involving several drivers across the endurance racing landscape. Notably, Sayers acknowledged that candidates with current LMDh and LMH experience are under consideration, raising the prospect of attracting talent from rival manufacturers.

This approach underlines the importance of experience in navigating the technical and strategic complexities of Hypercar racing. Drivers familiar with hybrid systems, tyre management, and multi-class traffic are especially valuable assets, particularly during marquee events where consistency often outweighs outright pace.

Strategic Patience

Rather than rushing appointments, Ford appears committed to a methodical selection process. The objective is not merely to assemble a fast line-up, but to construct a cohesive team capable of sustained success across a demanding global calendar.

With the Hypercar category entering a period of intense manufacturer competition, Ford’s measured approach could prove decisive. By the time the final seats are filled, likely towards the end of 2026, the manufacturer aims to have forged a line-up capable of challenging the established elite from the outset of its return.
