With less than 50 days remaining before the start of the World Cup, attention across international football is increasingly focused on squad preparation and managerial planning. Against this backdrop, reports in Argentine and Spanish media have drawn attention to claims involving Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and Real Madrid.
According to claims made on the Spanish radio programme El Partidazo de COPE on COPE Radio, journalist Manolo Lama stated that Real Madrid have made contact regarding Scaloni. The Spanish newspaper Marca reported the comments citing Lama, who also suggested that club president Florentino Pérez is assessing several coaching options and has shown particular interest in Scaloni.
Lama was quoted as saying:
“I can confirm that Real Madrid have made contact with Scaloni. They are speaking to many coaches, but they are particularly interested in this Argentine coach. It seems Florentino Pérez may be repeating a Lopetegui-like situation. Pérez himself has spoken with Scaloni. I believe he is reviewing everything before taking a final decision.”
This reference recalls the 2018 World Cup cycle, when Real Madrid announced Julen Lopetegui as their future head coach shortly before the tournament. The decision led to Lopetegui’s dismissal from the Spain national team on the eve of the competition.
However, Argentine outlet TyC Sports has reported that while interest from Real Madrid is acknowledged, people close to Scaloni deny any direct contact between the club president and the coach. Scaloni, aged 47, remains under contract with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) until the 2026 World Cup. AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia has reportedly offered an extension, although no agreement has yet been reached. Scaloni has not publicly commented on the proposal.
Sources close to Scaloni also state that he is not prepared to discuss his future before the 2026 World Cup. It is understood that any formal discussion regarding his next steps would take place after the tournament.
Scaloni was appointed Argentina head coach in 2018 and has since overseen a highly successful period for the national team, including victories in the 2021 and 2024 Copa América tournaments as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s coaching situation remains unsettled. Spanish media have reported that current head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, appointed in January, has struggled to deliver consistent results. Reports also suggest that the club could end a second consecutive season without a major trophy, with speculation growing that a managerial change may follow.
