Four European Titles Near Decision

May marks the fifth month of the calendar year, but in European club football it represents the concluding phase of the season. The 2025–26 campaign across major European leagues is scheduled to end within the next four weeks, with different competitions concluding on varying dates, including 17 May, 24 May, and 31 May.

Despite the staggered finales, several leagues may not require the final round of fixtures to determine their champions. In fact, within the next two days, title races in four competitions—Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, Turkey’s Super Lig, and Portugal’s Primeira Liga—could be mathematically decided.

La Liga

In Spain’s top division, 33 rounds have been completed, leaving five matches for each team. Barcelona lead the table with 85 points, while Real Madrid are second with 74. Barcelona are scheduled to face Osasuna, followed by Real Madrid’s fixture against Espanyol.

If Barcelona secure victory and Real Madrid fail to win (either a draw or defeat), the points gap would extend to 12 or 14. With only four matches remaining thereafter, such a margin would be unassailable, confirming Barcelona as champions. At present, Barcelona already hold an 11-point advantage and are also ahead on goal difference and head-to-head record.

Serie A

In Italy, all teams have played 34 matches. Inter Milan top the standings with 79 points, followed by Napoli on 69 and AC Milan on 67. With four matches remaining, Inter hold a 10-point lead over Napoli and a 12-point advantage over Milan.

Inter can secure the title by defeating Parma, who are currently positioned 12th in the table. Such a result would guarantee the championship regardless of other outcomes. Alternatively, the title could be confirmed earlier if Napoli lose to Como and AC Milan drop points against Sassuolo. Various combinations of results mean Inter require only minimal points to clinch what would be their 21st league title.

Turkish Super Lig

In Turkey, the Super Lig consists of 18 teams, each playing 34 matches. After 31 rounds, Galatasaray lead with 74 points, while Fenerbahçe have 67. A victory against Samsunspor would immediately secure the title for Galatasaray.

Even without a win, the title could be confirmed depending on Fenerbahçe’s result against Başakşehir, which is scheduled simultaneously. If both teams drop points, the existing gap of six or seven points would remain. Given Galatasaray’s superior goal difference, the remaining two matches would not affect the outcome, potentially delivering them a fourth consecutive league title.

Primeira Liga

In Portugal, Porto lead the standings with 82 points from 31 matches, while Benfica are second with 75. With three matches remaining, Porto hold a seven-point advantage.

Porto can secure the title by defeating Alverca. However, the outcome of Benfica’s match against Famalicão, scheduled approximately two and a half hours earlier, could also prove decisive. If Benfica lose, Porto would be crowned champions before taking the field. If Benfica draw, Porto would only need to avoid defeat in their own match to confirm the title.

Across these four leagues, the convergence of results over a short period means that multiple championships could be decided well before the official end of the season.
