The British coach emphasised that his selection criteria remain uncompromising, focusing heavily on tactical execution and player conduct. His remarks concerning the omission of midfielders Shopna Rani and Munki Akhter were remarkably direct, citing a decline in performance levels and a failure to adhere to coaching directives as the primary justifications for their exclusion.
“Shopna and Munki’s performances have been very poor,” Butler stated unequivocally. “They failed to perform at the expected level and did not follow instructions. I hope that one day they will realise I am doing them a favour. For now, they are not training with the squad; they are not even part of the practice group.”
This firm stance marks a clear shift in the team’s internal culture as the “Red and Greens” prepare for the 8th SAFF Women’s Championship, which is scheduled to commence on 25 May in Goa, India. The coach’s emphasis on discipline suggests that previous reputations will no longer guarantee a place in the starting eleven, as the management seeks to foster a more professional environment.
Preparation Phase and Regional Outlook
To ensure the squad is optimally prepared, the defending champions will undertake a 15-day intensive training camp in Bangkok. This period is designed to allow the players to acclimatise to high-intensity conditions and refine their tactical cohesion ahead of the main event. During the residency in Thailand, Bangladesh will compete in two preparatory friendly matches on 10 May and 17 May. Upon the conclusion of these fixtures, the team will travel directly from Bangkok to Goa on 21 May to begin their tournament campaign.
While Bangladesh enters the tournament as the reigning champions, Butler has been careful to manage expectations. He acknowledged that defending the title in India presents a vastly different challenge than their previous victories achieved on Nepalese soil.
The Indian Challenge: India, five-time winners of the tournament, will enjoy the significant advantage of playing at home. They are widely expected to be motivated by a strong desire to reclaim the championship trophy after failing to do so in the last two editions.
Rising Regional Standards: The head coach also pointed to the rapid advancement of other nations, specifically mentioning Bhutan. He noted that regional competitors have become significantly more organised and tactically sophisticated, meaning there are no longer any “easy” fixtures in the competition.

The finalised 23-member squad represents a major departure from previous iterations, with ten players from the 2024 championship-winning roster absent. High-profile players including Sabina Khatun, Masura Parvin, Matsushima Sumaiya, Krishna Rani, and Sanjida Akhter were already outside the selection frame following earlier internal disagreements and a reported “rebellion” against the coaching staff’s methods. Additionally, the squad has been weakened by the loss of defender Nabiron Khatun, who was ruled out due to injury.
To fill these substantial gaps, Butler has opted for a youth-centric approach, introducing eight players to the senior SAFF squad for the first time. Among these prospects are Shorna Rani, Halima Khatun, and Suravi Akanda Prity. Furthermore, Arpita Biswas and Momita Khatun have earned their maiden senior call-ups, representing the next generation of Bangladeshi footballing talent tasked with maintaining the nation’s regional dominance.
