In Big Bash Match, Fans Can Keep Balls They Catch in the Stands!

IThe Big Bash League is introducing an innovative rule aimed at increasing fan engagement and creating a more vibrant atmosphere in the stands. The new ‘Fan Catch’ rule, set to debut in the next Big Bash season, allows spectators to keep the ball if they catch it in the stands. The idea is to encourage greater interaction between the crowd and the game, making the stadium experience even more exciting.

This rule takes inspiration from Major League Baseball, where fans who catch a ball in the stands are allowed to keep it. In the Big Bash, this will apply during the first over of each innings. If a spectator catches the ball during the first over, particularly from a six, they will be allowed to take the ball home as a souvenir.

Both the men’s and women’s Big Bash leagues will implement this rule partially. Specifically, it will apply to balls hit into the stands during the first over of each innings. If a six is hit and caught, the fan can keep the ball, while play will continue with a replacement ball kept by the umpires.

Cricket Australia’s banking partner, Westpac, is sponsoring this initiative, and the new rule will come into effect during the first match of the Women’s Big Bash League this Sunday.

Each innings will begin with a Westpac branded ball. Umpires will also carry an extra ball in their pocket, which will be used to resume play whenever fans catch the ball in the stands. After the first over, the game will continue with the usual Kookaburra ball for the remaining 19 overs.

This initiative promises to enhance the excitement for fans, allowing them to become even more involved in the game, and adding a fun, interactive element to the matches.
