Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury is set to bring his remarkable 21-year association with Leicester City to an end by joining Sheffield United on a permanent deal.
The move marks a significant change in the 28-year-old midfielder’s club career, although Sheffield United is already familiar territory for him. Choudhury spent the 2024–25 season at Bramall Lane on loan, making 16 appearances for the Blades. His return will now be on a permanent basis, giving him the opportunity to continue his career with a club where he has already experienced competitive football.
Leicester City confirmed the move in a statement, acknowledging Choudhury’s long service to the club and wishing him well for the next stage of his career. His departure brings an end to one of the longest-standing associations between a player and an English club in recent years.
Choudhury joined Leicester’s academy as a child and gradually progressed through the club’s youth system before establishing himself in the senior side. During his time with Leicester, he made 165 appearances for the club across competitions.
His Leicester career also included two notable achievements. He was part of the squad that won the FA Cup in 2021, a landmark trophy in the club’s history. Three years later, he helped Leicester secure the Championship title as the club returned to the Premier League.
The move to Sheffield United therefore represents more than simply a change of club. It closes a substantial chapter of Choudhury’s professional career while opening another at a side with which he already has recent experience.
For Bangladesh, the transfer also carries particular significance because of Choudhury’s growing importance to the national team. Born in Loughborough, England, he has a Bangladeshi mother and developed his football career in the English system. He represented England at youth level, including the under-21 side, before later deciding to play international football for Bangladesh.
Choudhury made his Bangladesh debut in March 2025 against India. The match ended in a goalless draw and marked the beginning of his senior international career with the country.
Since then, he has made 10 appearances for Bangladesh and scored four goals. His presence has added experience and physical strength to the midfield, while his background in English football has made him one of the most prominent players associated with the national side.
His permanent move to Sheffield United now gives him another opportunity to establish himself at club level. Having already played 16 matches for the Blades during his loan spell, Choudhury will return to Bramall Lane with some knowledge of the club and its surroundings.
For Leicester, meanwhile, his departure closes a relationship that began when he was still a child. For Choudhury, it is the beginning of a new phase — one that could prove important not only for his club career but also for Bangladesh’s national team ambitions.
