Historical records indicate that Sheffield Wednesday was formed around 1820 under the name The Wednesday Cricket Club. Unlike most football clubs founded in the late 19th century, this organisation began as a cricket team. The reason for its unusual name? Simply put, the founding members, mostly working men with demanding jobs, were allowed only one half-day off each week: Wednesday afternoon. That brief respite offered them a chance to practise, compete and enjoy cricket, and naturally, the day became inseparable from the team itself.

The story took an intriguing turn in 1867, when club officials convened—on a Wednesday, naturally—to explore expanding into football. That meeting led to the formation of a football branch, officially marking the beginning of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
