Zimbabwe delivered one of the most extraordinary performances in their T20I history, leaving cricket fans around the world stunned. In a dramatic tri-nation clash at Rawalpindi, they routed Sri Lanka by a colossal 67 runs, defending a modest total of 162 with clinical precision. This emphatic victory marks Zimbabwe’s largest run-margin triumph over a Full Member nation in T20 internationals, a feat that signals their return to the global cricketing spotlight.

Sri Lanka, a side renowned for their limited-overs expertise, elected to field first after winning the toss. Initially, Zimbabwe appeared under pressure, losing two early wickets to the disciplined Sri Lankan attack. However, the backbone of their innings was a resolute 61-run partnership between Brian Bennett and skipper Sikandar Raza. Bennett contributed a crucial 49, narrowly missing another half-century in a pattern that has frustrated fans yet showcased his consistency. Raza, the architect of Zimbabwe’s success, scored a composed 47, combining power and finesse to anchor the innings.

Despite a promising middle overs stand, Zimbabwe managed only 22 runs in the final three overs, posting 162 for 8—competitive but far from imposing. The spotlight then shifted dramatically to Zimbabwe’s bowling.

Left-arm pacer Richard Ngarava set the tone by removing Pathum Nissanka in the very first over. Tendai Chatara Maposa followed immediately by dismissing Kusal Perera, while a sharp run-out accounted for Kusal Mendis, leaving the visitors reeling at 25 for 3. From there, Zimbabwe’s bowlers ran through the Sri Lankan line-up with clinical efficiency. Brad Evans’s sensational four-over spell yielded 3 for 9, claiming the scalps of Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Ishan Malinga, and Maheesh Theekshana. Ngarava added two more wickets, ensuring Sri Lanka never mounted a recovery.

Only Dasun Shanaka managed a flicker of resistance, scoring 34 runs, but it was too little, too late. Zimbabwe’s collective effort, led by the inspirational Raza, was a masterclass in both bowling and fielding. The win also had historic significance for Raza personally. He became only the third T20I cricketer—after Shakib Al Hasan and Mohammad Nabi—to achieve both 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in the format, further cementing his status as one of the premier all-rounders in world cricket.

Zimbabwe’s triumph serves as a reminder that they are a force capable of causing major upsets and will enter the remainder of the tri-series with renewed confidence. The cricketing world has witnessed a statement performance that could redefine the nation’s T20I trajectory.
