After a disappointing return from the international break, which saw Manchester United suffer a setback against Everton, Rúben Amorim’s side bounced back impressively in their 13th league match of the season. At Selhurst Park, the Red Devils claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace, thanks to a double assist from Bruno Fernandes.
The match initially saw the Eagles take the lead in the first half, aided by a penalty that came under the recently updated “double touch” rule. Lenny Yoro brought down Jean-Philippe Mateta in the box, and Mateta converted the spot-kick. However, VAR revealed a double touch on the initial shot, and the goal was ruled out. The referee allowed Mateta a second attempt, which he duly converted, bringing the score to 1-0 at the break.
United responded in the second half with two quick-fire goals. Joshua Zirkzee broke his 24-match goal drought by controlling a left-wing free-kick from Fernandes and slotting past Dean Henderson to equalise. The Dutch forward’s strike marked his first goal of the season and restored parity for the visitors.
Moments later, Fernandes took another free-kick, delivering a precise pass to Mason Mount, who scored to give United the lead in the 62nd minute. Fernandes’ vision and accuracy proved decisive, highlighting his continued influence on United’s attacking play.
Early in the match, United had tested Henderson multiple times. Casemiro’s shot from a throw by Diogo Dalot was saved, and Fernandes’ corner in the sixth minute was punched clear by the 188cm goalkeeper. A free-kick from Fernandes in the tenth minute was met by Casemiro’s header, which again failed to beat Henderson.
With this win, Manchester United leap up the Premier League table, claiming their sixth victory in 13 matches. Fernandes’ creativity and composure under pressure were instrumental in turning the game in United’s favour, demonstrating why he remains the team’s key playmaker.
