Mesut Özil Launches Humanitarian Initiative in Dhaka

Mesut Özil, the German international who famously lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has embarked on a new chapter of humanitarian engagement in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. Arriving in the country on Tuesday, 17 February, Özil formally inaugurated the development-focused project ‘TIKA’ on Wednesday, 18 February, at the University of Dhaka. The initiative is supported by the Turkish government and aims to improve health and education, as well as the welfare of local communities and refugee populations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Özil emphasised the importance of social responsibility, stating, “Contributing to societal welfare and the well-being of people is a duty we all share. I am delighted to be involved in this initiative and hope it will create a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of local communities.”

The ceremony, held on the University of Dhaka campus, was attended by university officials and local authorities. During the visit, Özil reviewed the project’s health services, educational programmes, and support plans for refugee populations. Following the inauguration, he prepared for his visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.

A brief overview of Özil’s Bangladesh itinerary is as follows:

Officials from the TIKA project highlighted that the initiative extends beyond medical assistance. It plays a pivotal role in enhancing education and supporting community-based programmes aimed at improving living standards. Key components include the modernisation of medical centres, educational workshops, and special support schemes for children and female students.

As part of his visit to the Rohingya camps, Özil is scheduled to meet with children and female students and participate in an Iftar gathering on 19 February, alongside representatives from both local and international NGOs. He will depart the country later that day.

Özil’s presence in Dhaka is more than a sporting milestone; it represents a compelling example of humanitarian responsibility and social engagement. Experts suggest his involvement could energise ongoing development projects in Bangladesh while drawing international attention.

Overall, Mesut Özil’s visit strengthens the connection between Bangladesh’s health, education, and refugee welfare programmes and global support networks. It is anticipated to inspire other athletes and international figures to engage in meaningful social initiatives, contributing significantly to the country’s humanitarian development.
