Mesut Özil, the German international who famously lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has embarked on a new chapter of humanitarian engagement in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. Arriving in the country on Tuesday, 17 February, Özil formally inaugurated the development-focused project ‘TIKA’ on Wednesday, 18 February, at the University of Dhaka. The initiative is supported by the Turkish government and aims to improve health and education, as well as the welfare of local communities and refugee populations.
Speaking at the inauguration, Özil emphasised the importance of social responsibility, stating, “Contributing to societal welfare and the well-being of people is a duty we all share. I am delighted to be involved in this initiative and hope it will create a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of local communities.”

During the visit, Özil reviewed the project’s health services, educational programmes, and support plans for refugee populations. Following the inauguration, he prepared for his visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
