Tickner fires NZ to ODI series win over England

New Zealand sealed a 5-wicket victory over England in the second one-day international at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Wednesday, clinching the three-match series 2–0. Late replacement Blair Tickner produced a brilliant 4 for 34, while Daryl Mitchell carried the chase with an unbeaten 56, following his match-winning knock in the series opener in Tauranga on Sunday.

England Innings

England were bowled out for 175 in just over 35 overs, with pace bowler Jofra Archer providing the only real resistance, taking 3 for 23. Jamie Overton top-scored with 42 from 28 balls, and Harry Brook, who had been in good form, made 34 before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner’s spin.

New Zealand Chase

Despite early discomfort from Archer, who trapped Will Young for a duck on the fourth ball of the innings, New Zealand steadily chased down the total. Kane Williamson provided a cautious start with 21 from 39 balls, before Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra rebuilt the innings with a 134-run partnership required. Ravindra fell for 54, pulling to deep fine leg, and Tom Latham was dismissed shortly after, giving Adil Rashid his first wicket.

Mitchell remained composed, while Santner supported with 34 not out, and Mitchell sealed the victory with a thick outside edge for a four in the 34th over, ensuring New Zealand won comfortably. Tickner’s figures, including the dismissal of Joe Root for 25, marked his best ODI performance.

“I thought I was just going to come in and run some drinks, but it was awesome to play,” Tickner said.

England captain Brook expressed disappointment:

“We want to go out there and entertain the world and it’s just not come off in the last couple of games.”
