Albuquerque Calls Season ‘Brutal’
Wayne Taylor Racing driver Filipe Albuquerque has candidly described the opening half of the 2026 IMSA SportsCar Championship as “brutal”, admitting that a combination of mechanical failures, accidents and post-race penalties has left the team’s No. 10 Cadillac V-Series.R with little chance of mounting a serious title challenge.
Despite flashes of genuine pace throughout the campaign, Albuquerque and team-mate Ricky Taylor have endured a frustrating run of results. The experienced pairing have yet to finish higher than 10th during the opening endurance rounds, with their fortunes finally improving after securing a hard-earned third-place finish at the Detroit Grand Prix.
While the Portuguese veteran acknowledged the disappointment of the season so far, he believes Wayne Taylor Racing has made significant progress in unlocking the potential of Cadillac’s latest GTP challenger and is steadily closing the gap to the championship frontrunners.
A difficult campaign
Reflecting on the first half of the season, Albuquerque offered an honest assessment of the team’s fortunes.
“For the No. 10 car, it’s been brutal. I think that’s the word for how the season is going,” Albuquerque told Motorsport.com during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Although the results sheet paints a disappointing picture, Albuquerque insists the underlying performance has improved considerably compared with previous seasons.
“We’ve seen, though, since the beginning, an increase in performance and pure lap time. We are much closer now.
“Last year we had a much bigger gap, especially to our team-mates in the No. 31 Action Express Cadillac.”
The veteran believes the raw speed is finally matching the team’s ambitions, even if circumstances have repeatedly prevented strong finishes.
Missed opportunities
Several incidents have combined to derail what Albuquerque believes could have been a far stronger championship campaign.
At the Rolex 24 at Daytona, gearbox problems forced the No. 10 Cadillac into retirement despite showing competitive early pace.
Sebring appeared to offer redemption as Albuquerque and Taylor finished on the podium behind the dominant Porsche entries. However, a post-race technical infringement resulted in their exclusion from the final classification.
Later in the season, Laguna Seca delivered another setback after contact with a GT3 competitor caused terminal suspension damage, ending any hopes of a competitive result.
Detroit finally provided some reward for the team’s persistence, with the pair finishing third and ending a lengthy podium drought.
Albuquerque believes those setbacks have disguised the true competitiveness of the programme.
“I think we were competitive in Daytona. Unfortunately, we had an issue that forced us to retire.
“In Sebring, we were the best of the rest behind the Porsches, so it was effectively a podium. Unfortunately, we lost it because of a technical infringement that wasn’t really related to performance.
“Now we’ve finally scored a podium.”

Encouraging signs
Although the No. 10 crew remain well down the championship standings, Albuquerque highlighted Wayne Taylor Racing’s impressive qualifying pace throughout the year.
The sister No. 40 Cadillac, driven by Louis Deletraz and Jordan Taylor, has consistently challenged near the front of the grid, qualifying inside the top three at four of the opening five rounds. Albuquerque himself also secured third on the grid at Sebring.
He believes the remaining challenge lies in consistently converting qualifying speed into race results.
“Wayne Taylor Racing has been qualifying in the top three almost every weekend, so we’re doing a lot of things right.
“We just haven’t managed to put both cars together during the races. We’re narrowing that gap all the time.”
Learning from Le Mans
Albuquerque also pointed to Wayne Taylor Racing’s growing technical knowledge through its collaboration with Cadillac’s World Endurance Championship programme.
Competing alongside Hertz Team JOTA at Le Mans has exposed the American outfit to different engineering philosophies, something Albuquerque believes will prove invaluable as GTP machinery becomes increasingly software-driven.
“Doing more races like Le Mans helps the drivers and helps the team.
“Working here with JOTA and seeing a different philosophy allows everyone to learn the complexity of these cars.
“Nowadays it’s no longer just about ride heights, wings and torsion bars.
“These cars are all about settings. The electronic settings can completely transform how the car behaves and ultimately determine its performance.”
Championship ambitions fade
The Detroit podium represented Wayne Taylor Racing’s first top-three finish of the season, but Albuquerque accepts that the championship battle has effectively slipped beyond reach.
The No. 10 crew currently occupy 13th place in the GTP standings, just behind the sister No. 40 Cadillac.
With the title now an unrealistic objective, Albuquerque has shifted his focus towards individual race victories and consistently fighting at the sharp end of the field.
“We’re nowhere in the championship this year.
“So, honestly, our goal now is to target individual races, score more podiums and hopefully take a victory.”
The Portuguese driver admitted his greatest satisfaction would come from winning through outright pace rather than benefitting from strategy or fortune.
“Personally, I want to be leading the race because we’ve genuinely got the fastest car—not because somebody else made a mistake or strategy happened to fall our way.
“IMSA strategy can sometimes hand you a win, just like unusual strategy can in IndyCar.
“But what I really want is to have the outright performance where everyone says, ‘That was the car to beat today.’ That’s the achievement I’m chasing.”
Looking ahead
Despite the disappointing results, Albuquerque remains optimistic about the direction Wayne Taylor Racing is heading. The improvements in qualifying pace, increasing understanding of Cadillac’s sophisticated GTP package and growing technical collaboration with the wider General Motors programme provide reasons for confidence.
While a championship charge may no longer be realistic in 2026, the veteran believes the foundations are now in place to convert promising speed into victories before the season concludes. With consistency finally beginning to match outright performance, the No. 10 Cadillac squad will hope the second half of the campaign delivers the results that the opening months have repeatedly denied them.
