Australia’s preparations for the forthcoming Ashes series have suffered a serious setback, with veteran fast bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the opening Test in Perth. This latest blow compounds the already strained pace attack, which has been battered by injuries to Pat Cummins and Sean Abbott.
The first Test, scheduled to begin on 21 November at the iconic WACA Ground, now sees Mitchell Starc as the only frontline seamer from the original squad. In Hazlewood’s absence, selectors are weighing the inclusion of Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett, a decision that carries historic significance. Should both bowlers take the field, Australia would, for the first time, feature two Indigenous cricketers in a Test match simultaneously.
To date, only two Indigenous players have represented Australia at the Test level—Jason Gillespie and Scott Boland. If Doggett earns his debut, he would become only the third Indigenous cricketer to achieve this milestone, marking a momentous occasion in Australian cricket.
Hazlewood sustained a right hamstring injury during a Sheffield Shield match for New South Wales at the MCG last week. Initial scans had suggested a minor strain, but further examination revealed more severe damage, ruling him out of the Perth Test. Abbott also suffered a left hamstring strain in the same fixture, meaning both experienced pacers are sidelined at a critical juncture.
In response, Michael Neser has been added to the squad as cover. The Queensland seamer has played only two Tests to date, yet selectors appear likely to opt for a pairing of Starc with Boland and Doggett, presenting a fresh but relatively inexperienced fast-bowling attack.
Spin duties will continue to fall to Nathan Lyon, while all-rounder Cameron Green is expected to shoulder a heavier bowling workload. Selectors are also exploring the option of including both Green and Beau Webster to bolster the side’s all-round balance.
Despite these challenges, Australia faces the Ashes series with a blend of adversity and opportunity. The team could carve out a unique chapter in cricket history, combining resilience with the prospect of historic Indigenous representation. Fans will be watching closely to see if a youthful and largely untested attack can rise to the occasion against a formidable English side.
