Ashes Alarm: Hazlewood Out!

Australia’s preparations for the Ashes have been thrown into disarray once again, as fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been officially ruled out of the opening Test in Perth. Initially, the veteran paceman had reported minor hamstring discomfort, and early scans had failed to detect any serious damage. However, repeat imaging on Friday revealed a strain significant enough to sideline him from the start of the series. Hazlewood will remain at home as he begins a structured rehabilitation programme, leaving the Australian selectors scrambling for cover in a fast-bowling unit already under immense pressure.

Cricket Australia has stressed that early scans can often miss low-grade muscular injuries, explaining the initial optimism over Hazlewood’s condition. The timing of this setback could hardly be worse, with Australia’s seamers facing a pivotal Test series opener against England. Hazlewood’s absence, coupled with other injuries, threatens to leave the team light on genuine pace options at a crucial moment.

In response, Queensland seamer Michael Neser has been added to the squad. Neser, who made his Test debut during the 2021 Ashes in Adelaide, brings a wealth of domestic experience despite only two international appearances. He has been included as cover for both Hazlewood and Sean Abbott, who also suffered a hamstring strain during the same Sheffield Shield fixture. Neser’s presence will provide the selectors with a reliable backup option should other injuries worsen.

The Australian fast-bowling corps has been severely depleted over recent weeks. Pat Cummins, Sean Abbott, Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Spencer Johnson, and now Hazlewood are all currently sidelined. In light of this, attention has turned to 31-year-old Brendan Doggett, who has enjoyed an outstanding Sheffield Shield season since returning from a minor hamstring issue of his own. Doggett has claimed 13 wickets at an average of just 14.69, putting him in prime contention for a Test debut in Perth.

Meanwhile, captain Pat Cummins continues his rehabilitation at the SCG, targeting a return for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba on 4 December. The team’s management remains optimistic about his fitness, but the fast-bowling shortages make each recovery crucial to Australia’s series hopes.

Australia’s selectors now face a delicate balancing act, weighing the need for experience against the urgency of fielding a fully fit seam attack. With England’s pace battery ready to exploit any weakness, the Perth Test promises to be a stern test of depth and resilience.
